Each DPC season consists of three Tours, one regional league, and one Major, with eight teams in each Division I and II of each league and a promotion and relegation system. The bottom two Div I teams are demoted to Div II after six weeks of competition, while the top two Div II teams are promoted. The final two Div II teams are ejected from the League, and the open qualifiers from the upcoming Tour take their places.

The top two to four teams from each region’s Div I tournament will be invited to a Major following each Regional League. Additional significant increases in prize money and DPC points are offered by these Majors. The top 12 teams in the DPC rankings as of the 2021–2022 DPC season received direct invitations to The International. There were three tours that were completed with The International.

Six additional last-chance qualifiers, one in each region, were held for the remaining teams in the Regional League after the 12 teams confirmed their attendance at Dota 2’s most prestigious event. Six more teams had qualified for the Dota 2 world championship by being the winners of each qualifier. A second Wildcard event was added to the Dota Pro Circuit in 2022. The International had 20 teams instead of the usual 18 because the second and third teams from each Regional Qualifier had competed for an additional two slots.
