In the starts episode of Vinland Saga, Thorfinn experiences another traumatic dream in which his younger self enters Einar’s burning house with hostile intentions. The dream then switches to him struggling to climb a cliff, surrounded by corpses. He wakes up to find Einar sitting beside him and asks about his father and Askeladd, who were mentioned in his dream.

Together with the other retainers, Thorfinn and Einar continue plowing the farm with the help of horses, and the others soon realize that Einar’s presence on the farm will help the wheat grow better. Thorfinn finally tells Einar who Askeladd is and briefly explains his story. He also feels that he has forgotten something more critical than Askeladd and remembers his last words. This realization leads him to the emptiness he feels as hatred was his only purpose.
The old master takes them to the beach and teaches them how to catch fish using a net as the sun sets. He advises Thorfinn that feeling empty is an opportunity to rebuild oneself, which Thorfinn ponders on as he walks through the woods with Einar. Trying to cheer Einar up, he talks about how people can change, and he feels that he’s becoming a better person.
However, their peace is disrupted when they come across the field, which is wholly destroyed and the wheat torn apart. Einar realizes that the retainers were responsible and is blinded by rage, wanting to kill them all. Thorfinn tries to stop him, but Einar insists that they deserve to die and that Thorfinn should be angry too. However, Thorfinn feels that as someone who has spent his entire life plundering and destroying, he has no right to be angry.
Pater, who had been a slave before, helps them out and shares his experiences of bullying. They have a quiet walk back home, and Einar is frustrated with their current life. As they cross paths with the retainers, Thorfinn tries to restrain Einar, but he breaks free and tries to punch one of the retainers. Thorfinn holds him back, but Einar manages to attack him. In the ensuing scuffle, the other retainers join in and start beating up Einar as Thorfinn lies on the ground, lost in memories of his past and his dream of falling down the cliff.
