Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 9: Oath Overview.

During a scuffle with the servants, Thorfinn was taken by surprise and rendered unconscious

Thorfinn’s eyes flutter open to find himself lying on a grassy hillside. As he rises, he realizes with relief that the horrors of his dream, in which he witnessed his father’s death and spent his life as a slave and warrior, were just a figment of his imagination. But his peace is short-lived, as he quickly realizes that he is still unconscious and being held captive by Einar’s retainers. Einar refuses to back down, despite being outnumbered, and the retainers eventually leave with a warning of punishment for their disobedience.

In his dream, Thorfinn finds himself face to face with his father, Thors, who seems to sense that something is amiss. As Thors points out the blood on Thorfinn’s knife, the scene shifts to a disturbing memory of a young Thorfinn killing Einar’s family and then Einar himself. The two grow old together, with Thors explaining that his strength was never intended to harm others but to protect himself and those he cared for. As the dead rise up from the ground to surround them, Thors reminds Thorfinn that there are no true enemies in this world and that everyone deserves respect.

Thorfinn’s next vision is a more sinister one. He falls into a pool of blood where he finds himself surrounded by dead Vikings, all engaged in a never-ending battle. Among them is Bjorn, who recognizes Thorfinn and greets him warmly. Askeladd, perched atop a column, appears and warns Thorfinn that he has never learned from his mistakes and is back in the same place he always was. This afterlife is a place where all warriors are sent, and it is a place without end or victory. Askeladd tells Thorfinn that the only difference between this world and the living is that everyone here is an enemy. He reminds Thorfinn that he used to live here, but he was able to escape because he had become empty. Thorfinn insists that he is still a warrior, and he lashes out in frustration, only to find himself surrounded by the very people he had killed.

As the vision fades, Thorfinn awakens to find himself back in the present, still held captive by Einar’s retainers. The dream has left a profound impact on him, causing him to question his own values and beliefs. He realizes that he has been living a life consumed by violence and death, and he is not sure if he is ready to face the consequences of his actions. As the retainers taunt him, Thorfinn resolves to break free and find a new path for himself, one that is not defined by his past as a warrior. The episode ends with Thorfinn’s determination to start over and find a new purpose for his life.

As Thorfinn wakes up, he realizes that the dream he just had was hauntingly real. Einar is still knocked out beside him, but Thorfinn feels an urge to climb a hill that seems to represent his atonement. He climbs, with the weight of the dead bodies he had killed pulling him down, but he keeps going. As he reaches the top, he finds himself in a bright field, surrounded by people he had killed. One of them is crying, and Thorfinn is consumed by guilt. Askeladd jumps in to help and tells Thorfinn that he needs to climb, even if the bodies keep clinging onto him. Thorfinn wakes up to find Einar collapsed beside him. They head home, and Thorfinn confesses to Einar that he has killed many people, including innocent ones. He tells Einar that he never wants to hurt anyone again, and wants to atone for his sins. Einar doesn’t fully comprehend Thorfinn’s guilt, but he listens.

Meanwhile, Ketil informs the retainers that Einar and Thorfinn won’t be punished for the farm’s damage. The retainers are angry, but Ketil shows them a coat button that Pater found on the ravaged farm, asking Trygve where his coat is. Ketil suggests that wild boars ravaged the farm, and there was no fight between the slaves and the retainers. The retainers leave, and Pater thanks Ketil. Ketil acknowledges Pater’s strength, stating he’s been through a lot as a former slave, and isn’t afraid of the retainers turning against him.

it seems that Thorfinn is experiencing a moral crisis and is grappling with the guilt of his past actions. He is determined to atone for his sins and start anew. Meanwhile, Ketil manages to protect Thorfinn and Einar from punishment by using a fabricated story. In the next episode, it is possible that we will see Thorfinn continue to reflect on his past and attempt to make amends for the harm he has caused. Additionally, Ketil’s actions may have consequences, leading to further conflict between the slaves and the retainers.
