Overview of Vinland Saga Season 2: Episode 3

In the starting of episode, Olmar joins Fox and Badger on their journey. Olmar begins whining that no one understands him when he becomes easily intoxicated. Fox and Badger comment that he isn’t a pleasant drunk and feel they made a mistake taking him with them; Olmar believes they are laughing at him inside. They are serving his father for a pittance, so Olmar overhears them and asks if they are proud to be warriors. Fox claims they can be beneficial in a battle, but Olmar claims he has never seen them working. Fox argues that this is because the community is so tranquil. Olmar orders them to draw their swords in an effort to gauge their fighting prowess.

Olmar is pushed to the ground by Fox and Badger as they flip the table and steal his sword with ease. Olmar then loses his temper and demands to be killed because he is a nobody. Fox understands that Olmar does not want to be treated like a child and assures him that becoming a true man is not difficult, but that he must first carry out a rite of passage by murdering a person. Fox claims that following a murder, he will gain confidence and realise how vulnerable human bodies are. Fox replies that he knows the ideal victim who even resides in this farm when Olmar asks who.

Upon waking, Einar walks to the bathroom. He then rushes to check on Thorfinn after hearing him shouting. When Thorfinn wakes up bewildered, Einar asks him what he imagined that caused him to scream in such a way, but Thorfinn replies that he can’t recall. The woman that Einar observed the previous day is already present when they go to wash their faces at the well. She tells them she’s finished and tells them to wash their faces. The woman disagrees with Einar and tells him he has a beautiful face, which makes Einar feel embarrassed. Einar claims that even if he washes his face, it won’t get any better. Arnheid is the name she gives herself, and she speculates that Einar lately joined them.

Einar affirms and says that he is an Englishman. Arnheid was surprised by that because she noticed he spoke the language very well and assumed he was Norse. According to Einar, the residents of his community are descended from Nords and speak both English and Norse. Aware that his heavy accent makes it difficult for a woman like Arnheid to understand him, Einar apologises. Arnheid expresses regret for not informing him of her position. Then, Einar is shocked to discover that she is not Ketil’s daughter but rather a different slave and Ketil’s personal attendant.

When Fox and Badger arrive, Fox makes a joke about them getting together to plan their escape. While Badger wonders if Einar is also a slave because he doesn’t recognise him, Fox asks Thorfinn his name. Thorfinn and Einar are instructed to follow Fox after Einar says that he joined them this summer. Einar wonders who they are as they follow them because they are carrying swords. They are essentially the farm’s bodyguards and resident defence force, according to Thorfinn. Even though Einar assumes that anything they desire won’t be good, he smiles when he remembers Arnheid giving him a complement. Fox observes and remarks that Einar seems upbeat and in a good mood.

Olmar receives a sword from them when they visit him and other men. Later, Fox orders Olmar to make a good cut. Fox explains that they want Einar to die for their young lord since he is becoming a man and that Einar doesn’t understand what is happening. When Fox explains that their lives are not their own and that their owner is free to do as he pleases with them, Einar is furious and asks what they did to deserve it. Olmar asserts that he is not the rightful owner of Einar and Thorfinn and that, if he murders them, he is responsible for making amends to his father.

Fox tells Olmar to kill them if he continues to deny it. Thorfinn is instructed to flee by Einar, who immediately charges at Olmar and kills him. He orders Thorfinn to run once more and go tell Ketil as he battles Olmar. Thorfinn isn’t moving, but two other men are pointing their swords in his direction and admonish him to remain still and observe. Olmar can kill him, says Thorfinn with a sigh. They should leave Einar to go back to work and simply kill one, he says.

Later, Snake awakens. He then turns to look around and begins to contact his grandfather to ask for breakfast. He is told by the elderly guy that it is past time for breakfast and that if he wants to eat, he should occasionally assist him with the harvest. Snake declines, and the elderly guy advises him to find something on his own because he won’t cook for him. Snake decides to go home because he doesn’t want to cook.

The men are shocked by Thorfinn’s reply, and Fox again inquires about his name. Upon being questioned about what it means to be cut, Thorfinn replies that he will perish. Although Einar tries to stop him, Badger silences him. Fox claims that he cannot ignore what Thorfinn said and that such comments lower the value of their offering. He wonders if Thorfinn is aware of what they are selling, and when he isn’t, Fox says it is death. Fox remarks that Olmar is even more fearful of dying than everyone else and points out that everyone is terrified of dying.

Fox claims that everyone fears death, which gives it worth. He pulls out his sword and slashes Thorfinn’s chest just slightly. He then raises his sword and commands Thorfinn to flee. He performs a couple more cuts and requests that Thorfinn plead for his life. When Fox slashed his cheek at that same moment, Thorfinn didn’t even flinch, prompting Snake to remember that Thorfinn is Ketil’s slave. Thorfinn queries whether people live their lives in order to avoid dying and why they should be afraid of death. He ponders whether there is any good in life and then complains that nothing good has ever occurred to him. Fox loses his temper and slashes a portion of Thorfinn’s left ear, remarking that his eye will follow. Snake yells to stop Fox as she is ready to do it. Fox freezes in terror at hearing Snake. Fox is curious about Snake’s return. Snake commands Fox to approach him before punching him in the face. Snake then asks Badger to clarify the problem as he turns to face him.
