Brodd and some other men bring a message to Olmar that he will not be accepted into the king’s Guard

Brodd and a few other men are brought by a man in a hood to give a message to Olmar. The message is that Olmar lacks the required skills and won’t be allowed to join the king’s guard. Because they are aware that Olmar is unable to complete the job, Brodd and the other men find this amusing. Olmar is made fun of by them, but the hooded guy doesn’t seem to care. The hooded guy remarks that their own faces are equally silly-looking as they get closer to Olmar.

When Brodd approaches Olmar, he says hello and says he has a word for Olmar from Wulf. Olmar is aware that he will probably be declined, but Brodd is determined about getting the point across. Brodd continues by saying that although the captain praised him and granted his request to join the king’s guard, he observed that Olmar’s sword skills required work. Sadly, at this moment they were unable to grant his request. But as Brodd and the other men started to laugh, it became clear that Olmar’s rejection was not regrettable because he had lost to a pig.

Brodd continues to mock Olmar, wondering if the pig was wearing chain mail or if there was an open position for a cook, but then remembers that Olmar couldn’t even cut the pig. Olmar becomes angry with their insults and draws his sword, threatening to fight back. Despite Brodd’s warning that he could still hurt someone, Olmar attacks them in a fit of rage.

Thorgil was enjoying his meal when he heard a commotion outside. People were shouting that a five-on-one fight had broken out. Brodd, one of Thorgil’s companions, told the others to let him handle Olmar on his own. He didn’t want it to look bad if five people were seen fighting someone who couldn’t even cut a pig.

Olmar began to play with Brodd, who effortlessly avoided his blows and beat him up without even drawing his blade. Olmar was instructed to rise up and kill Brodd by Thorgil when he came. Thorgil was irritated by Olmar’s weeping. Olmar was picked up and told that the only two choices available to warriors who had been insulted were to murder or perish. Olmar was ordered to murder Brodd by Thorgil, or else he would have to commit suicide. Thorgil persisted in encouraging Olmar to plan out his murder of Brodd.

The covered up guy accidentally fired a coin into Brodd’s eye while he was distracted. Olmar took advantage of this opening to quickly knife Brodd to death. Thorgil realised that Brodd had experienced a change. The other four men who were with Brodd made the decision to protect their honour and pulled out blades. Olmar was praised by Thorgil, who advised him to leave everything up to him. The four guys were quickly dispatched by Thorgil, who hacked them to pieces. Olmar was shocked that he had murdered someone.

Thorgil looked at Brodd’s injured eye and guessed it was caused by a stone or something similar. Ketil showed up and was shocked that they had killed the king’s men. Thorgil explained that it was self-defense after Olmar had been insulted, and since they were outnumbered, it was only fair that Thorgil joined in. Ketil reminded them that duels were against the law, but Thorgil argued that nobody really cared about that law, and that insulting someone with swords would have consequences. Thorgil assured Ketil that duels were common and usually went unpunished.

However, the guards arrived and were confused about what had happened, especially when they saw that Olmar was still alive. They also noticed Ketil and assumed he was a relative. Thorgil introduced himself as a member of the king’s guard and explained that it was a fair duel and they had done nothing wrong. But the guards didn’t want to hear it; the king had forbidden duels and they had shown disrespect, so they were arrested.

Thorgil was in trouble with the law and when the guards tried to arrest him, he reacted violently. He killed four of the guards and injured the fifth. Thorgil demanded answers from the last guard, threatening to kill him if he didn’t cooperate. The guard explained that they set up Thorgil’s friend, Olmar, to take the fall for a crime he didn’t commit. They did this so they could arrest Thorgil’s other friend, Ketil, who was falsely accused of being involved in the crime. Ketil was resigned to his fate, thinking he was going to be caught by the powerful enemy, Canute. However, Thorgil saw this as an opportunity to fight back against their enemies. He laughed maniacally as he declared that this was just the beginning of their battle.

Canute finds out that Ketil’s family has managed to escape. Wulf takes responsibility for sending men to secure his ship, but they have not returned, leading to Thorgil’s escape. Canute acknowledges that Thorgil is a skilled warrior, and they proceed with their plan to punish Ketil by heading to his farm. If Ketil is not there, it’s fine, but if he resists, they will overpower him. Wulf agrees to mobilize 32 of his guards and 70 Jomsvikings, totaling 102 men. They plan to leave as soon as Floki arrives in three days. When alone, Canute sees the vision of his father, Sweyn’s head, who is laughing and expresses his happiness that his son is becoming more like him.

Leif tells Ketil’s family that it’s okay to come out while they are at sea. Thorgil and the others come out of barrels and thank Leif for his help. However, Leif reminds them that it’s a deal and he won’t break the law just to be kind. Thorgil assures him that they will keep their promise by buying all his cargo for triple its value, and they’ll take the slave, Thorfinn. Ketil refuses to come out of the barrel, but Thorgil invites him anyway. Canute doesn’t care if Sweyn insults him because he’s determined to create his ideal world and find his lost love.
