Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 10: The Cursed Head Overview.

Three years after Thorfinn and Einar began cultivating the forest

After three long years of hard work, Thorfinn and Einar finally cut down the last tree on the land they had been clearing. Einar had spoken to Pater, who promised that they could buy their freedom next harvest season from the cleared land and even have some money left over. However, Einar wasn’t sure what he would do once he was a free man. He didn’t have anyone waiting for him back home and was worried about Arnheid, who was still enslaved. Thorfinn also wasn’t sure if he would return to Iceland once he was free. As the two men laughed about their uncertain futures, Thorfinn posed a question to Einar: was it possible to rid the world of war and slavery? Einar thought it was a dream, but a worthy one nonetheless.

Their celebrations were cut short when Ketil and Olmar arrived on the scene. Ketil was surprised to see that they had finished cutting down the last tree and wondered if they could sow the seeds in time for planting. Einar assured him that they could if they hurried. Ketil then offered them a discount and promised to set them free once they had finished sowing the seeds. Einar and Thorfinn were ecstatic and yelled in joy, but Ketil warned them not to celebrate too soon, as he had to leave to visit King Harald in Jelling. He asked them to pass on a message to Sverkel and left.

As the two men continued their work, they pondered Ketil’s offer to work for him as his retainers once they were free. They weren’t sure what to make of it, but for now, they were content with the promise of their freedom. As the sun set on the clearing, Thorfinn and Einar reflected on their uncertain futures. They didn’t know what the future held, but they were hopeful that they could make a difference in the world and work towards a better future for all.

Gunnar woke Canute up from his slumber, informing him that they were nearing Jelling. Upon their arrival, Wulf informed Canute that his brother, King Harald, was in critical condition and could no longer speak. Canute was saddened by the news and recalled how he and Harald used to play a game that he saw some kids playing in the palace.

As he reminisced, Canute remembered how his brother was always there to help him, even when he fell and scraped his knee. He wanted to thank him for everything he had done, but as he watched the children playing, the ball reminded him of his father’s head. Wulf noticed Canute’s distress and asked if there was a problem, but Canute dismissed it, saying it was nothing. As Canute prepared to visit his ailing brother, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness and loss. He knew that his brother’s time was limited and that he would have to step up and take on the responsibilities of the crown soon.

Harald and Canute were brothers who inherited different territories from their father, Sweyn. Harald inherited Denmark while Canute inherited England. Despite their different kingdoms, the brothers had a good relationship. During Canute’s conquest of England, Harald supported him by sending fleets of ships. Unfortunately, shortly after Canute became King of England, Harald fell ill and had no heirs.

Canute visits Harald in his bed with Estrid welcoming him. He reminds Estrid to call him “Your Majesty” but tells her not to wake Harald as he will be staying for a while. Canute waits for Harald to wake up and when he does, Canute tells him to rest and not worry about his kingdom. Harald tells Canute that Denmark is his, but Canute brushes it off and tells Harald to get better so they can play their childhood game again. However, Canute sees Sweyn instead of Harald and Sweyn asks him what he hopes to achieve by visiting the man he poisoned himself.

Sweyn wonders why Harald needed to be killed when they could have ruled the world together. Canute confesses that he didn’t do it for the sake of peace and prosperity but for his own ambition to rule as king of all the North Sea. Sweyn warns Canute that the crown’s curse will not spare him and by taking the two crowns of England and Denmark, he will suffer more than Sweyn did. Estrid brings Canute back to reality and he explains that he just felt a bit dizzy. Canute then leaves as Estrid prepares a room for him.

Despite his confidence, Canute begins to question whether he made the right decision in taking the two crowns. He wonders if he will be able to handle the responsibilities of ruling two kingdoms, especially since Harald’s health is deteriorating rapidly. Canute reflects on his past actions and the consequences they may bring. He feels a sense of guilt and wonders if the crown’s curse is real. However, Canute knows he must push through these doubts and continue to rule with confidence, hoping to make a positive impact on the lives of his subjects.

Canute sits in his room with the crown and a woman enters to offer him a drink. He declines, fearing it may be poisoned. Sweyn’s head appears, and Canute questions his presence. Sweyn explains that he is worried about being poisoned himself, as he had poisoned others. Canute tells him it was mischievous to appear in daylight, but Sweyn retorts that it shows the curse is growing stronger. Canute explains his vision of uniting the nations to create a utopia, and the necessity of Harald’s death to avoid conflict. Sweyn praises Canute for thinking like a king and they laugh together. Canute recalls playing with Harald and hearing his advice to become stronger than both him and Sweyn. Sweyn then calls for Harald for a war council, and Canute is left alone with his thoughts.
