The player said on his live stream after the game that Riot Games had fined Cloud9’s VALORANT star Jordan “Zellsis” Montemurro for making a sexual gesture during his team’s match against NRG on April 23. When Zellsis was “air-sucking dick,” the official VCT Americas broadcast was filming him, but the camera almost immediately cut away.

When Zellsis said, “Apparently, I’m on the mainstream for this shit dude, that got me fined,” his viewers believed he had received the $10,000 fine that was the stated donation target of his live stream. “Listen, I received a fine, but I’m not sure how much. Except one team that has already surpassed incredibly low expectations, all of the North American VALORANT teams have found themselves sitting in a pack with 1-2 records just a few weeks into the 2023 VCT Americas season.

Although it’s unclear exactly which rule Zellsis violated during the C9 vs. NRG match that led to Riot fining him, he likely went against the VALORANT Champions Tour’s Code of Conduct. According to Riot, section 7.3.1 of the Global Competition Policy reads as follows:

According to the rules, “a team member may not use any language that is offensive, insulting, libelous, slanderous, defamatory, obscene, discriminatory, threatening, foul or vulgar during a live event, online event, media event, or in any communication relating to any official competition or VALORANT.” According to Riot’s rulebook, it is within its discretion to impose “fines, suspensions, disqualifications, and other disciplinary action.”

After defeating 100T, Leaf told TheSpike.GG that “[C9] are better than most of the teams and should have little trouble playing against them,” demonstrating his firepower and self-assurance. C9 will attempt to support that claim during a taxing super week in which they compete against both NRG and FURIA.

Although you can see in his live stream that Zellsis is having a good time about the fine, some VALORANT fans on YouTube disapproved of Riot’s choice and found the fine to be controversial. Riot likely fined him because the gesture was seen by thousands of children at home, even though it’s unclear if they would have done so if the broadcast hadn’t caught it.
