VALORANT tech team has left no stone unturned to fight high latency. The devs took a deep dive into the game’s system latency earlier this year to find out the causes that are stopping VALORANT from improving its performance.

Latency means the time taken for data to move from one point on a network to another. It is very crucial for tactical shooting games such as VALORANT. In this game, Marcus Reid, the tech lead explained, latency is the time between when players click their left mouse button and when the gun fires on the monitor.

Every millisecond in the game is crucial. The lower the latency, the faster players will be able to see their actions being processed. This could give players a possible advantage over their opponents.

The tech lead also carried out a series of tests and made some measurements and found out the following:

  • Players should use fullscreen instead of windowed fullscreen
  • They need to double-check the refresh rate setting in Windows
  • Players shouldn’t use Vsync
  • If available, players should set Reflex to On + Boost
  • They should consider theirr hardware when selecting graphics quality settings

For people who can tolerate the sluggish Alt + Tab should make use of exclusive fullscreen rather than a windowed fullscreen, Reid suggests. This methods works well on every computer and should have a considerable impact on lowering the latency of the game.

Players who have a high refresh rate monitor, say 240Hz, should ensure their Windows settings are fine. Higher refresh rate significantly reduces latency even at same framerate, as per the tech lead.

Reid has also advised players to never make use of VSync. Vertical Synchronization is meant to help create stability by synchronizing the image frame rate of the game with the refresh rate of the game. Not just that, it consistently ramps up latency.

Players should keep the NVIDIA Reflex to On + Boost if they have hardware that can support it. Reflect On takes down latency in “GPU-bound scenarios.” Reflect on + Boost os somewhat similar but also better CPU cases bound on the render submission thread, as per the tech lead. Players should keep their graphics driver up to date when they are using NVIDIA Reflex.

Lastly, players should consider their hardware when they are choosing graphics quality settings in VALORANT. They need to turn off anything that they don’t require visually. This advise is especially for people using older GPUs.
