Anime characters who speak rarely are among the most interesting ones because they find other ways to impress the audience. They mostly prefer to let their actions do the talking for them or try to avoid criticism by keeping their thoughts to themselves.

There are several reasons why anime characters might not want to or be able to express their thoughts through verbal communication. However, no matter why they chose to stay quiet or away from the spotlight, the fact that they speak rarely adds a sense of mystery and intrigue that makes them stand out from other characters. In this article, we will have a look at characters who rarely speak.

Megumi Yamamoto from Special A

Special A is undoubtedly an underrated shojo anime where the top seven students at Hakusen Academy get special privileges if they continue to maintain their good grades. However, all these top students at the institute have distinct personalities. And Megumi Yamamoto stands out from her peers, thanks to her notebook that she uses to communicate with the people around her.

The character writes in a notebook because she doesn’t communicate verbally. Since singing is an important part of her life, she worries that speaking would jeopardize her ability to follow her dream of singing. While the character doesn’t talk, she does sing for her friends to show that she cares for them.

This character is the daughter of an immortal man and no matter what kind of situation she finds her father in, she tries to protect him and the secret to his immortality. She is passionate and intense and learns to accept the kindness of others later in her life and express it verbally.

Chané was able to speak when she was young, but after her father revealed his immortality to her to test her devotion, she asked him to take her voice away. The character speaks only a few lines throughout the series, and lets her actions do the talking.

Komi Shouko from Komi Can’t Communicate

Komi Can’t Communicate is a pretty popular anime show about Komi Shouko and her social anxiety. The show focuses on how Komi desires to make new friends. The character wants to be able to speak to people who approach her, but her anxiety doesn’t allow that. But she is still very popular in her school for her good looks.

The character often stutters and shakes when speaking to others at the start of the series, she is capable of writing messages and speaking when she is alone. Thankfully, she meets good people who support her in practicing speaking in and outside school. The character might never become a talkative person, but she does eventually become comfortable around others.

Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion

Rei Ayanami is among the least expressive characters in Neon Genesis Evangelion. The character prefers to be direct when speaking to people and often remains silent in a cryptic way. Rei knows and accepts her role as a pilot for the Evangelion units.

Initially, her quiet personality and attitude toward Evangelion units made the series popular and separates Reo from other Neon Genesis Evangelion characters. However, since she speaks rarely, it makes her even more mysterious.
