The Valve-hosted and -produced “International” is an annual esports world championship event for the video game Dota 2. The International has been hosted yearly since 2011, with the exception of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when it was originally held at Gamescom as a promotional event for the game. The competition features 20 teams: 12 from the Dota Pro Circuit’s final standings and six more from the regions of North America, South America, Southeast Asia, China, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe that won their respective regional playoffs. TI 11 DOTA 2 Prize Pool

The International has a huge prize pool that is collected by crowd funding through a type of in-game battle pass called the “Compendium”, which raises money from players buying them to get exclusive in-game virtual goods and other bonuses.

The prize money for The International has increased with each iteration, with the most recent one, The International 2021, giving the teams a total of $40 million (£29 million). But the prize pool has been increased this year.
