Team Heretics is making a significant change and benching a significant off-season acquisition after a shaky start to the 2023 VALORANT Champions Tour season. The organization revealed today that Aleksander “Zeek” Zygmunt, who is famous for his run on Acend to win Champions in 2021, is now a substitute player for Heretics. This change not only caught many fans off guard but also puts the team in a difficult situation since the transfer window closed on March 26.

Before their regional matches, some teams, like Cloud9, made changes, but after poor performances by other teams, like Karmine Corp in the EMEA region, coaches were left with no choice but to continue playing until the season’s end in September. Team Heretics benched the former VALORANT Champions MVP:

Heretics substitute assistant coach Brandon Weber for Zeek in the lineup as a result of this roster change. The team claimed in a statement that “personality mismatches” were the cause of Zeek’s benching and that Weber “may not have the same level of experience” but “will be able to change the dynamics of the team and perform.”

Zeek is recognized for his tenure on Acend in terms of his qualifications and titles. He won MVP at Champions 2021 and played a significant role in Acend’s championship run.

Even though an emergency roster unlocks would be nice, I think these teams should take note of this and learn their lesson about not getting a 6th player. The majority of organizations have done it to save money, but Riot is actually paying these organizations a stipend just to play in the league. There really shouldn’t be any justification for this. If an organization really wants to save money, why not just pay the 6th man the lowest salary allowed and then give them incentives or bonuses when they participate in games or fill in? There are definitely ways to maintain some level of satisfaction for both parties in this situation.

Just observe Fnatic and how they operate in such a model manner. It not only benefits them when things go wrong, such as at the start of the EMEA season, but it also establishes your credibility with Riot and the community. Fortunately, this is only the first season, and the majority of the teams who must use these coach fill-ins are probably not going to the playoffs or Tokyo. If they learned their lesson, there will be more roster unlocks the following year, which will encourage these same organizations to take the chance on a 6th.

With the exception of a tweet in response to Polish commentator Krystian “TERP” Terpiski, Zeek has not yet made a statement about his switch to the bench. He made use of the well-known José Mourinho GIF to warn that further discussion of his predicament would land him in serious trouble. Even so, Zeek has previously been benched from a team competing at the highest level of EMEA VALORANT. Early in 2021, he encountered a similar circumstance with G2 Esports. His trade to Acend was a direct result of that benching, and that only turned out well for him. Fans will have to wait to see how Zeek in 2023 performs this time around.
