After being taken down from many countries Helldivers 2 is now again available on Steam in a few countries. Many players were unhappy with Sony’s requirement that users link their Steam accounts to their PlayStation Network accounts, the game is still not accessible anywhere even after this restriction was changed.

Now it’s back in regions like Puerto Rico and American Samoa, at first Helldivers 2 was a huge hit selling millions of copies. The popularity of the game on the PC shows the value of games having cross-platform availability.

Helldivers 2 Initial Success and Setbacks

In February 2024 Helldivers 2 was released for the PlayStation 5 and PC, it was an instant hit. Instead of sticking to their typical strategy of postponing PC conversions Sony launched this dual-platform product in the hope to gain a bigger market share for PC games.

The game soon gained popularity with early server problems selling over 12 million copies and ranking among Sony’s best-selling titles. The game’s Steam rating collapsed and refund requests increased as a result of the required PSN account connecting.

In the initial release for the game Helldivers 2 gamers may receive a refund via Steam even if they had played past the two-hour limit. This choice revealed the extent of player anger as well as the consequences of Sony’s policy error.

Impact on the Gaming Industry

According to industry analyst Mat Piscatella Helldivers 2 is Sony’s eighth highest-grossing game in the United States with over half of its sales occurring on PCs. This figure highlights the value of cross-platform releases as well as the PC gaming market’s significant revenue potential.

The popularity of Helldivers 2 on the PC shows how the game production industry is changing and how businesses must adjust to meet the needs of their customers. The global accessibility problem has not been fully solved but the fact that Helldivers 2 has been relisted in some regions. Equal access to games across different platforms and regions must be a top priority for the gaming business.

The focus needs to shift to ensuring that players everywhere can access Helldivers 2 while Sony works to resolve the consequences of its controversial PSN connecting requirement. When Sony first introduced PSN account linking, there was a lot of criticism, one of the year’s top-selling titles Helldivers 2, was inaccessible to gamers worldwide.

Players began to demand refunds and leave negative feedback on Steam and the backlash was immediate and strong. Sony later removed the PSN connecting requirement after realising the growing unhappiness although the game was still inaccessible in many regions.

Steam Relists Helldivers 2 in Select Regions

Helldivers 2 is once again available for purchase in many of U.S. territories including American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to a recent update from SteamDB.

The complete returning is a step in the right direction to increase the game accessibility for more players. Although this action has attracted positive feedback it highlights the ongoing difficulty in ensuring the worldwide accessibility of well-known games.
