Starfield has been officially announced for nearly four years. The game’s release date is set for November 11, 2022, which is seven months away. The release date was chosen to coincide with the release of Skyrim, Bethesda Game Studio’s de facto mainstay, on 11.11.11. It was possibly the most memorable release date in video game history. We can assume that the game development is nearing completion for a finished product half a year away from launch. We will, however, get a glimpse of what Starfield gameplay will be like. The great restraint displayed thus far by Bethesda has understandably led some fans to be sceptical about the state of gameplay behind closed doors.

However, it makes sense for Bethesda to keep their gameplay cards so close to their chest. In addition, Bethesda will find a plethora of significant opportunities for their big reveal in the coming months.

Fallout 4 is the closest marketing equivalent to Starfield. It was a significant leap forward in terms of Creation Engine technology for the studio, and it also shares some of Starfield’s sci-fi leanings.

According to Fallout 4 promotional materials, Bethesda has relied on creating quick hype through condensed ad campaigns, which are six months in this case.

The huge contrast here is that Fallout was already a well-established franchise with a consistent fanbase spanning more than a decade of different games. In contrast to Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

Starfield is a completely new intellectual property. It’s Bethesda’s first in nearly two decades. This puts their announcement four years before the expected release date into context.

For the time being, Bethesda has been drip-feeding its nascent community tidbits and perspectives on what the game is all about.

Another significant factor is the design team’s emphasis on exploration and non-granular aspects of game design rather than refinements such as combat.

The developer’s diaries have been teasing to impart their new world’s design philosophy for months. These featurettes, for the most part, laid the groundwork for a more familiar substantial Bethesda ad campaign.

With the dev diary fluff removed, the showcase of hands-on gameplay will most likely be limited to the six-month period seen with Fallout 4. This just so happens to coincide with some major gaming events, or would have if E3 hadn’t been cancelled this year.

In its wake, however, there will be the Summer Game Fest, which has confirmed the presence of the majority of major-league game developer outlets.

Fans will learn a lot about Character Creation and the improved dialogue system at the upcoming Summer Game Fest. Bethesda intends to release regular gameplay content for Todd Howard’s walk-in on the big stage livestream.
