It’s a common-enough scenario that most Apex players can relate to and which plays itself out far more often at the highest competitive levels of play like the Apex Legends Global Series. And while there have been many legends in the past that have sought to remedy the problem of having no cover to play it safe, most of those characters have been stop-gaps. They are giants like Gibraltar and Newcastle, whose cover players have limited playing time behind them.But a new legend has been creeping into the meta and ALGS squads lately, which solves that problem without the need for solid cover: Catalyst.

Catalyst was not considered very powerful by most of the game’s top players when it entered the game on November 1st. Catalyst’s Dark Veil Ultimate. Aurora, the former Major Pushers/Team Empire squad, has long been known as a team that isn’t afraid to run meta-meta team compositions. Notable for being successful in ALGS’s second year with Bangalore and Mad Magi Comp, they were the first in EMEA to bring Catalyst to the competition. And the team has demonstrated one of the things Catalyst does best, even if it scores off: not giving space to enemy teams.

Using Dark Veil to cut the final zone in half, Aurora nullifies Horizon Union’s ability to use their numbers advantage and surround them. Instead, Horizon Union tries to go around the wall before the final zone cuts them off, and two players are struck down because of it.Suddenly, the numbers advantage is on Aurora’s side, and even though both of their players are short, it is almost impossible for Horizon Union’s last player to move forward and take advantage as they will have to wallow or slowly pass through Valkyrie to do so. Augment it with the jet pack. No matter what option they choose, Aurora still has the advantage, and they clean up the game because of it.Soon, North American squads were trying it out as well, including TSM as a catalyst.
