On September 18, gaming enthusiasts witnessed one of the biggest leaks in gaming history when development footage of GTA 6 surfaced over the web. The gameplay of the upcoming game was seen by fans the very first time. These in-development videos shed light on new systems, protagonists, and other details of the game.

Rockstar was quick to ensure the leak doesn’t majorly impact the development of the game due to the enormous leak. Just days later, the 17-year-old hacker behind the leak was taken into police custody in England.

However, speculations and inside information are still slipping through the cracks. Now, it seems GTA 6’s budget has been revealed in leaked DMs where the hacker claimed “over $2 billion” has already been shelled out by the studio for the development of the game.

The hacker revealed the $2 billion investment has already been made Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, according to the information he could get his hands on during the hack.

Well, this information should be taken with a grain of salt as of now. It’s still unclear if $2 billion has already been invested or whether it is the final estimated cost of the production which will go on for a few more years. There’s also no clarification if this amount includes marketing costs, which can easily hit the nine-figure mark.

To compare, GTA V’s budget was $265 million, making it the most expensive video game ever produced. The game made more than $815 million within a day and has since sold more than 169 million copies, becoming the second best-selling title of all time. It is also the most profitable entertainment product in the history.

If the leak holds some truth and the budget for the next game in the franchise is actually $6 billion, Rockstar will have to wait for some years after its release to earn its money back.
