On Reddit, posts are starting to surface showing bots infiltrating ranked play. Reportedly, it’s an AI-powered bot that was originally created by RLGIM as a training project — a machine learning effort — but has now been turned into something malicious. It is not known who, when, or how, but someone has taken and manipulated RLGIM’s ‘Nexto’ bot, introducing it into rank play and destroying the balance. However, it’s not easy to determine if you’re playing against the Nexto bot. This was a concern discovered by Sunless Khan on YouTube, who made fun of the Nexto build and pretended to be a bot in a literally ranked play. There has been a banner in the Rocket League for a few years. Since being free to play and acquired by Epic Games, the base game and eSports scene has blossomed. For example, the RLCS World Championship broadcast last August achieved record high viewership figures, boasting a $2 million prize pool and unprecedented level of competition. It’s a massively popular game with millions of fans, and for the most part, it’s been ‘clean’ and cheat-free.

Historically, fans have largely appreciated it. In 2019, a user, now rocket league eSports coach, took to Twitter to get a little compliment to the game: “Let’s appreciate the fact that Rocket League is one of the only sports in the world where there are no fraudsters. I think we sometimes take it for granted because we get used to it but it’s really amazing when you think about it”.@CorruptedGabe on Twittter.

Now, some examples have surfaced online showing players competing in ranked modes that can only be explained as bots. Their rivals, regarded as Nextio bots, are impossibly good at the game, playing with a questionable style that sounds pretty perfect. In a statement, representatives of RLGIM, the original creators of the Nexto bot, explained: “”RLGOM is incredibly lucky to have a super passionate and understanding community, and we won’t let these fraudsters stop us. We are taking steps to ensure that our bots cannot be misused in the future and we can’t wait to show everyone the exciting projects we are working on.”

In Sunless Khan’s video, evidence was obtained showing a suspicious account showing that he had used the Nexto bot to shoot from diamond to grand champion in rank play in just one day. For now, all players can report suspected fraudsters and leave them to handle the cyanics, while RLGOM works on bots in the back-end.
