The news came to light after PUBG publisher Crafton posted an earnings report detailing a new extraction shooter game codenamed Project BlackBudget, in which PUBG Studios is involved. In its previous earnings report in November 2022, Crafton revealed that it was in the process of developing Project Black Budget, which it described at the time as a new “PvPvE looter shooter”. In the report, Krafton says it is challenging itself “to popularize the extraction shooter genre based on our PUBG production and service experience.” It describes the project as “an ever-changing PvPvE open-world and satisfying gunplay that delivers unpredictable and exciting experiences,” with the publisher “considering releasing it on PC, console, and mobile.”

It seems like the multiplayer gaming landscape is trending very much towards the extraction shooter genre, similar to a few years back when basically everyone was making battle royale games. Tarkov first popularized the mode, and CoD has its own version in the DMZ. Even Dr. Disrespect and his new game studio, Midnight Society, are currently developing an extraction shooter called Deaddrop. It’s safe to expect more studios, publishers, and recognizable IPs to join the genre over the next few years.

In the report, Krafton says it initially expected the new game to be released in 2024 or 2025. In a table showing when its pipeline projects will be released, Crafton indicates that Project Black Budget will launch in 2024 or 2025. It classifies it as one of six “strategic” releases, along with some of its other upcoming games, such as Project Gold Rush (“a compelling PvPvE sandbox” that looks to rival Fortnite from concept art and description). And the next Subnautica game. Two of its strategic releases are scheduled for 2024, and four of those are scheduled for 2025.
