CS:GO was released in 2012 and its number of players is still growing. The tactical FPS’s concurrent player count dropped after the pandemic as gamers retreated into the wild, but the game is coming back in those record numbers. Since launching as the fourth entry in the series in 2012, Global Offensive has become infamous for its often toxic communities, high skill threshold, competitive scene, and influence around the gaming space.

Most attribute this surge in players mainly to the pandemic keeping us all inside, although, perhaps unsurprisingly, it looks like most of those players have remained fairly stable since then. Player Count Leaps Back To Mid-Pandemic Numbers As 2023 Hype Grows In CS:GO:

The CS:GO player count actually rebounded in April and May 2020, jumping past 1.3 million concurrent players for the first time in its history. According to Steamcharts, January 2023 has been a big month for Valve titles. It reached a peak of 1,199,684 concurrent players within a 24-hour period this month.

That’s still nearly 100,000 short of the April 2020 record, but it’s still an impressive feat. In January, the daily average of CS:GO gamers increased by 14.5 percent, which means an increase of almost 91,000 players from the previous month. There is no clear reason why it has seen such an increase, however, events like the Blast Premier Spring Groups have just finished, and other big tournaments like IEM Katowice 2023 and EPL S17 are just around the corner. The main reason is the start of the new e-sports season.

Since August 2022, CS:GO has continued to average over 1 million concurrent players, with the highest peak player count being 1,129,095 in November. But, by 2023, these numbers have started increasing even more. In January 2023, the game’s player count averaged 709,380 players, with a peak player count of 1,133,610 (+12.72% gain from December 2022).

At the beginning of each year, there seems to be a significant increase in the player base. In January 2022, a similar incident occurred; The average player base increased by more than 10 percent. The end of 2022 looked to be one of the best periods ever, with one million peak concurrent player starts since August. Hopefully the FPS can continue the good work for the rest of the 2023 CS:GO season.Along with that, the competition has certainly helped spark more updates, patches, and fixes to CS:GO. The competitive map pool has been tweaked a lot in recent times compared to years past, and the impending Source 2 engine update has completely revamped Global Offensive as a game.
