An included trailer advertised the tournament as an opportunity for the countries to have “Overwatch 2’s first World Cup champion.”Thirty-six countries will participate in the next World Cup. According to a blog post about the event, these countries will be revealed in January 2023. After year-long trials and tryouts, 36 teams will compete in the World Cup qualifiers in June 2023. Sixteen teams will then advance to the group stage LAN event, where the last eight teams will qualify for the World Cup Finals.

Activision Blizzard has yet to announce whether BlizzCon, the company’s annual celebration of its games and fans that’s often held around Halloween, will return this year. The timeline set by the Overwatch World Cup however indicates its revival in 2023. Previous World Cup Finals had always been held during BlizzCon.The last Overwatch World Cup was held in 2019, with Team United States earning their first victory after four years of competition. Team South Korea held the title for the first three years of the World Cup and are expected to be title favorites in 2023. Canada, and Team Brazil.
