Back in 2016, when Overwatch came out, it was made available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One players. Ever since only one new platform has been added with Blizzard taking its popular title to the Nintendo Switch.

With four different player bases and a sequel on the horizon, crossplay and cross-progression are without a shadow of a doubt two of the most highly sought-after features for Blizzard’s Overwatch 2.

Thankfully, there has been a lot of chatter on both topics ahead of the new entry’s launch in the franchise. In this article, we will discuss what to expect from the upcoming game.

Crossplay & cross-progression coming to Overwatch 2?

With the game slated to launch on October 4, Blizzard has also confirmed that Overwatch 2 players will get to take advantage of crossplay and cross-progression straight away.

It’s been over 5 years since the original Overwatch launched and no such systems were available back then. However, the sequel will surely bring new functionality for both at launch.

When the Switch version came out 3 years ago, former director Jeff Kaplan shared his thoughts on bringing crossplay, something he couldn’t see during his tenure with the company.

How will crossplay & cross-progression function?

Crossplay

Currently, friends need to be on the same platform if they wish to enjoy the game together. With crossplay, some can join the team from PC, some from Xbox, and one from the Nintendo Switch.

Teams from all platforms can work together to get victories in Overwatch. There will be no additional costs to take advantage of the feature. Besides, the feature also improves matchmaking speeds.

Cross-progression

This feature enables players to maintain a single BattleNet account across all platforms. For early Overwatch players, giving away five years of experience and cosmetics might not be possible.

thankfully, players will get the option to merge their accounts ahead of the launch, bringing all their cosmetics and experience to one unified BattleNet profile.
