Blizzard has officially confirmed the first King of the Hill map for Overwatch 2. Dubbed “Antarctic Peninsula,” the new map witnesses players travel to the southernmost point of the world and experience cold like they never have seen before in the game.

The new map is filled with ice and snow, as the name suggests. Apart from the cold weather elements, players are also finding some research stations, abandoned ships, and a lot more in the playable area.

The unveiling of the map has caused a stir among players and forced them to wonder when the map will finally be making its way to Overwatch 2. In this article, we will be discussing exactly that.

Overwatch 2 Antarctica Peninsula release date

As confirmed by developers, Antarctic Peninsula will come along with Season 3, which is said to kick off today, February 7. Blizzard confirmed the release date earlier this week, and that’s when players can expect the new season of content to kick off.

With the arrival of the Season 3 update, players will gain access to the Antarctic Peninsula map. Similar to other King of the Hill maps in the game, there will be three different areas that players will be required to attempt to take control of during the match.

One hill point can be found inside a ship, while another one is in an underground mine, and the third one can be found at the center of a laboratory. As some players might have thought due to the icy nature of the map, the Antarctic Peninsula will be a part of Mei’s backstory in Overwatch 2. Mei along with her research team was in Antarctica searching for secrets that could be revealed in the upcoming PvE Campaign, scheduled to arrive in late 2023.

A fun element of the map that won’t be a secret is the penguins players will be able to see all over the map. Players won’t be able to harm or pet the penguins, but they will be there for everyone to see. Additionally, there will be a small fishing minigame that players will be able to enjoy while moving around Antarctic Peninsula.

Players happy to lose out on Banners in Overwatch 2

OW2 players don’t seem very interested in using the latest iteration of Banners, especially considering how similar they are to souvenirs, which many believe are useless.

Players have pointed out that banners could potentially just be filler content for Overwatch 2, and its only use could be to pad Battle Passes. Taking into account that players need to buy the Battle Pass each season to get goodies in the premium track, it looks a good amount of players are hoping Blizzard doesn’t bring the feature to the game altogether.

It’s unclear whether or not Blizzard will introduce banners to the new game with Season 3, but the community is definitely not looking forward to using the feature.
