After losing to Fnatic by a slim margin of 2-1 on May 15 and being reverse swept, G2, one of the best CS:GO teams in the world, did not advance past the BLAST Paris Major Legends Stage and said goodbye to the $1.25 million competition. Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen, the captain of G2, reacted quickly and accepted responsibility for the elimination today, protecting some of his star players like NiKo and m0NESY, who performed below par against Fnatic.

After recovering from missing the IEM Rio Major in November 2022 with victories at the BLAST Premier World Final in December and the IEM Katowice Major in February 2023, expectations for G2 to win the BLAST Paris Major trophy were as high as ever. However, NiKo and G2 as an organization will enter Counter-Strike 2 without ever having won a CS:GO, Major. “Today is on me,” HooXi wrote on Twitter following the loss to Fnatic. “The two maps we lost were mostly because of not keeping our cool and being prepared for the pressure and with that comes bad and rushed decisions. The horrible feeling that our T sides cost us after we have been doing so well. Sorry everyone, I tried my absolute best.”

Despite having previously come tantalizingly close, NiKo was a member of the G2 lineup that placed second at the PGL Major Stockholm 2021. After G2’s defeat by Fnatic, CS:GO commentator Conner “Scrawny” Girvan said, “The guillotine in Paris drops on the head of the king who will never touch the crown.”

Some of the top CS:GO teams have had a difficult Major. While noticeably weaker teams like Monte and GamerLegion have already qualified, FaZe Clan and Natus Vincere (NAVI) are both still fighting to make the playoffs.

Although almost everyone in the CS:GO community is discussing NiKo’s failure to win a CS:GO Major trophy like other outstanding players, HooXi is also negatively impacted by the setback. He was defeated by roeJ and nicoodoz, two of his former teammates from the Copenhagen Flames, in addition to being the team captain and one of the key players in their success.

After winning Inferno (19-16), it appeared that G2 would defeat Fnatic and compete for a playoff spot at the BLAST Paris Major, but they witnessed nicoodoz and crew tie the series on Ancient (16-11) and easily win on Vertigo (16-13). The only G2 players to finish with a positive K/D ratio were Jks and huNter-, while NiKo, m0NESY, and most noticeably HooXi (-29 K/D) underperformed. Given their early exit from the BLAST Paris Major, G2 will almost certainly talk about roster adjustments for Counter-Strike 2.
