The video game franchise Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi will soon have a new installment. The Dragon Ball series has experienced a significant resurgence in recent years, with many of the video game franchises receiving new content along with the first new anime entry in four years, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, which is currently playing in theatres. But now, with the upcoming comeback of the Budokai Tenkaichi brand, we’re getting one of the largest revivals yet.

This year’s Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour event featured a special announcement about a new Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game that is currently in the early stages of development. There is currently no information available regarding the new entry’s release date or window, but you can watch the (Japanese) teaser trailer down below to see how the franchise’s visual fidelity will be improved for this new release. It’s also a confirmation that the next game will feature Super Saiyan Blue Goku as well.

Budokai Tenkaichi Games

A set of three games in the Budokai series that completely changed the course of the series led to the creation of the Budokai Tenkaichi franchise. These video games, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z Sparking!, developed the Budokai series’ Tekken-inspired combat style into a full-fledged arena fighter. These games also increased the number of characters on the rosters, making them huge and small (both in terms of popularity and size literally), with the third game having about 98 characters and 160+ transformations available. The previous Budokai Tenkaichi game was released 16 years ago, and since Dragon Ball Xenoverse practically stole its core gameplay, the announcement of a new game comes as a surprise. It already seems like more than just a remake with the addition of the enhanced Goku seen in this teaser trailer, but there are still a lot of unknowns since it is still so early in the production process.

For the PlayStation 2, Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi (known as Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! in Japan) was initially released in 2005. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2, also known as Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! Neo in Japan was released for the PlayStation 2 in October 2006 in Japan and in November 2006 in Europe, North America, and Australia. The Wii version of the game was published in North America in November 2006, in Japan in January 2007, in Europe in March 2007, and in Australia in April 2007. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3, also known as Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! Meteor in Japan was released for the PlayStation 2 and Wii in October 2007. In November 2007, the PlayStation 2 version of the game was released in North America and Europe. In Europe and Australia, the Wii version of the game debuted in February 2008 after debuting in North America in December 2007. Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Tag Team, the most recent installment in the franchise, debuted in August 2010 on the PlayStation Portable. Only this game from the Budokai Tenkaichi series was made available for portable devices.
