Dota 2 and League of Legends are two of the most-played multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA). Both are also among the most streamed and viewed games on Twitch. While League of Legends is more popular, Dota 2 players have stayed loyal to the game. Both games dominate the segment so strongly that new entries haven’t been able to make a mark for themselves. But which game is harder to play? Let’s find out.

Major Differences

League of Legends undoubtedly offers smooth gameplay, while the original Dota felt laggy at times with choppy animations and long cast times. As the patches were rolled out, it became better, and even more in Dota 2. But since LoL started from scratch, it had a slight edge over its competition.

In Dota 2, if players are moving in a certain direction and then blink away the other way, the hero will take some time to move in the other direction. This might sound like a small issue, but it makes a lot of difference in critical situations. LoL also has some delays, where skills must be ready before they are cast. But they aren’t as common as they are in Dota 2.

For new players in Dota 2, there are several features that could prevent a smooth new player experience. LoL, on the other hand, offers its own set of unique mechanics to learn the game.

Which game offers more freedom?

The biggest differentiating factor between the two games is that LoL is more straightforward when it comes to general strategy. Dota 2, however, is much more freeform. For both games, players have to struggle to push and destroy a central structure. But the ways of doing so could be different in both games.

Dota 2 could be a more difficult game to master. Getting good at it might take more time than usual. It can be daunting to gain MMR while trying to unravel the secrets of farm patterns. League of Legends changes that by taking a different approach to MOBA.

LoL is created to be fast and smooth, while for Dota 2, the big moments come in game-changing spells with a high cooldown. That said, Dota is more tactical and more unpredictable. It’s more complex and at times could end in an hour-long struggle, which might not impress the new players. This is the main reason League of Legends is always ahead in popularity and player base.
