The Chinese Dota 2 squad Knights has been convicted of match-fixing during the Lima Major 2023 despite having previously been convicted of this in the past. Discussions about the alleged match-fixing erupted on social media sites like Reddit after the Knights’ matchup against Geek Slate and Entity in the Major had quite peculiar chances. In game one of the series, the team had a financial advantage, but Geek Slate was highly favoured to win, and when Geek eventually prevailed, this raised questions. During the series versus Entity, a comparable occurrence was noted. The Dota 2 community has been criticising Knights for a while now due to allegations of map hacking and match manipulation. Knights is criticised for allegedly using match manipulation

The Knights team has put in a solid performance over the last few months, but its actions have frequently been criticised as being suspicious. The team’s match against Geek Slate and Entity at Lima Major 2023 is the source of the most recent accusation. The odds of the total number of kills against Entity being an odd number were also unusually high, in addition to the odds of a Knights loss despite being 5k up in the game against Geek.

This puzzled me because the odd against even number is typically quite close because the result is so unpredictable. In the end, there were an odd amount of kills because the first game in the series featured 48:17 kills and the second game featured 25:10 kills. Oleksii “BafiK” Bafadarov, a Dota 2 caster, tweeted his worries about conceivable unethical behaviour in the games of Knights and tagged Epulze, the Lima Major’s organiser, and Valve to look into the matter.

A growing quantity of criticism has been levelled at Knights ever since they were first charged with participating in map hacking during the first few series of the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) 2023 Tour 1. It was claimed that Perfect World, the organisation behind the Chinese DPC tournament, had evidence of the use of suspected vision hacks by the recently formed side Knights. It had additionally sent them to Steam for review.

Knights being charged with unethical behaviour became a recurring motif, even though this did not progress further. The latter half of Tour 1’s match between it and EHOME was also suspected of being rigged, with famous Ukrainian caster Vitalii Mykolayovych “v1lat” Volochai tweeting about the odd odds.

Knights has not yet won the Lima Major 2023 despite a very strong group of results in Tour 1. The team has lost seven straight games and has looked much worse than its competitors. Although there have been a number of complaints, it is unclear whether they are true and whether Valve will take any real action. At the same time, Valve has been reasonably aggressive in recent months about permanently and temporarily banning players from professional Dota 2 for their participation in match-fixing and account exchange.
