IEM Katowice 2023 (CS:GO) concludes on 12 February in Poland. The 24 strongest teams in the world compete for the title and a share of a million-dollar prize pool. The tournament was full of surprises and unexpected results, but it lagged behind last year’s championship in terms of viewership. The esports chart tells you why fewer people were watching the broadcast than at IEM Katowice 2022.

The event, won by European organization G2 Esports, garnered a peak viewership of 712,534, according to esports data platform Esports Charts. IEM Katowice 2022, which also featured G2 in the final, recorded a maximum viewership of over 1.1m. IEM Katowice 2023 had three phases: first, the play-in phase, the full group stage lineups were determined, and then the six playoff slots were contested. The competition itself was really exciting to watch. There were plenty of intriguing matches and storylines, and players from the younger generation stunned some of the greatest legends of this esport.

In particular, the duel between Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov and Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostylev was better than an action movie. We now know that G2 is easily the strongest team in the world and we have practically entered a new era. IEM Katowice Major 2019 continues to be the most popular IEM event of the destination, recording 1.3 million peak viewers. Meanwhile, the PGL Major Stockholm 2021 is the most watched CS:GO eSports event ever recorded on the esports charts, attracting an impressive 2.7m viewers.

It was his second consecutive $1 million event win. If he manages to finish in the top-4 in ESL Pro League Season 17 as well, there will be no doubt in anyone’s mind that 2023 will be his. For the 2023 tournament, G2 Esports was once again the most popular esports organization at the event, achieving the highest number of average viewers (355,200) and total hours watched (6m). The organization that ranked second in hours watched this year was Team Liquid (5m), with NAVI (304,500) in second place in average viewership. Both organizations were eliminated in the semi-finals by G2 Esports and Heroic, respectively.

CS: GO is growing rapidly. The game currently has over 760,000 average concurrent players and is nearly twice the size of Dota 2. Normally, with such a growth in the player base, you would expect the number of tournaments to skyrocket. After all, esports is a big part of CS:GO and has been since the beginning. But unfortunately, what we see is actually a huge drop in the interest of people. The game is played by around 20 million people and only 3-5% of them get to see the best players in the world compete. Considering how good those players are and the overall quality of each event, it’s a bit strange that so few people tune in when the best CS:GO in the world is being played.

The numbers do not lie. According to Esports Charts, IEM Katowice 2023 only had 234.000 average concurrent viewers. At its peak, the tournament was watched by 708,000 people. But it only reached the Grand Finals between G2 and Heroic.
