The Plot

The anime revolves around Finn, a young boy who discovers that his orphanage is on the verge of closing due to financial difficulties. With the aim of making a fortune, he sets out for a casino but finds himself caught up in a car chase and bloody shootout caused by a man’s “lucky” card. Finn soon learns that the world order is controlled by a set of 52 X-Playing cards, which have the power to bestow different superhuman abilities on those who possess them. With the help of a secret group of players called High Card, Finn embarks on a dangerous mission to find these cards.

Production Details

High Card is based on an original work by Homura Kawamoto, the author of the Kakegurui franchise, and his younger brother Hikaru Muno. The anime is directed by Junichi Wada at Studio Hibari, with Naoki Kuroyanagi overseeing the series scripts. The characters are designed by Nozomi Kawano, and the music is composed by Ryō Takahashi. The opening theme song, “Trickster,” is performed by the band FIVE NEW OLD, while Meychan performs the ending theme song, “Squad!.”

High Card is not just an anime series but a multimedia project that includes manga and novels as well. The High Card -♢9 No Mercy manga, drawn by the original character designer, Ebimo, launched on Square Enix’s Manga UP! service on August 31, while the High Card -♢7 Never No Dollars novel began serialization in the Monthly Newtype magazine on August 9.
