After defeating the LOCK/IN champions, Fnatic, in the championship game on May 28, Team Liquid was named the 2023 VALORANT VCT EMEA League champions. Fnatic was the dominant team in the EMEA region during the VCT-partnered league after winning the LOCK/IN tournament in March. They won all nine series, only losing one map to BBL Esports while using a substitute.

As a result, the team became the clear favorite in the ensuing playoffs. They lost a further map to FUT Esports but beat Team Liquid in the winners’ final 14-12, 13-6 to advance to the championship game. Ending Fnatic’s 21-game winning streak, Liquid wins the VCT EMEA championship:

Team Liquid, who had won six of their previous seven games, was the opponent in this rematch. With a two-map ban advantage, Fnatic was expected to defeat their opponents once more easily. This appeared to be happening when Fnatic took the lead on the map, winning Lotus 13-11.

The liquid then transported Fnatic to Ascent, the map on which BBL had defeated them earlier in the season. They countered Liquid’s nine victories in a row with seven victories of their own to force overtime and end the match with a 14–12 victory.

Despite Fnatic’s unbeaten record on Haven dating back to October 2022, before Timofey “Chronicle” Khromov had even joined the team, Liquid sped through the map, earning a 13-6 victory, before ultimately pulling away from a tied 9-9 game on map four to win Fracture 13-11 and the series 3-1.

With 83 kills to 61 deaths on Killjoy throughout the series, Fnatic’s Emir “Alfajer” Beder had the best overall performance, while Chronicle struggled with only 40 kills. In contrast, Liquid’s performances were much more evenly distributed, with each player recording between 61 and 72 kills. By doing this, Team Liquid secured the top seed for the upcoming Tokyo Masters competition and lifted the EMEA 2023 trophy.

Fnatic had not lost a match before this one since October 19th, and they had never lost with this full lineup. After 21 games, Liquid has now shown that they can be defeated and that there are multiple legitimate title contenders in EMEA.

Team Liquid will be the top-seeded EMEA team in Tokyo as a result, but neither team will compete in the tournament’s opening group stage; instead, their title runs will begin in the quarterfinals. This is because Fnatic will now take advantage of EMEA’s second direct playoff berth at Masters Tokyo, which was made possible by Fnatic’s victory in LOCK/IN.

Notably, no EMEA team has yet qualified for VALORANT Champions 2023. This is because four EMEA teams—Liquid, Fnatic, NAVI, and FUT—are competing at Masters Tokyo, and the top three teams from Tokyo will advance, with one section missing out. The VCT Americas champion will be decided between Brazil’s LOUD and America’s NRG before the best teams in the world meet in Tokyo, Japan, from June 11 to 25. Paper Rex has already crowned VCT Pacific champions earlier in the day.
