Jean’s muses

The “Night of the End” episode of Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 began with a dream within a flashback, with Jean imagining how his life would have been if he had supported the Yeagerists, drank expensive alcohol, and lived a comfortable life with a wife and children. But his fantasy was quickly dashed when Hange knocked on the window to get his attention.

The flashback depicted Jean and Mikasa’s alliance with Marley, which he had mentioned to Onyankopon in Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 episode 8. Hange met Jean among the ruins of buildings destroyed by the Rumbling and explained that Mikasa was bringing her up to speed on everything.

Hange asks Jean and Mikasa to help stop Eren

Hange informed them that Levi was still alive, albeit severely injured, and would be unable to fight for some time. She went on to say that they were teaming up with the Cart Titan and the remaining Marleyan soldiers to stop Eren, because genocide was never acceptable, even if it meant protecting all of the Eldians on Paradis Island.

Mikasa inquired as to how they planned to proceed, and Hange explained that they would need to gather allies, particularly the power of the Nine Titans. She went on to say that she was no longer in charge of them because the old chain of command had broken down.

Mikasa agreed without hesitation and stated that she wanted Eren to stop killing people. Jean was still torn, because stopping Eren would put the people of Paradis in danger. It wasn’t until Hange mentioned the sacrifices of their fallen comrades that Jean remembered Marco and decided to help them.

Magath blames Eldians of Paradis

The flashback ended, and the action returned to the present, with everyone hiding in the forest. Magath couldn’t figure out why the Eldians would join forces with the Marleyans and risk their own victory.

He blamed them for the Rumbling because it was their interference that allowed Eren and Zeke to meet. Hange told him that none of them wanted a genocide, but Magath took that as a cue to ask if they had finally realised who was on their side when it came to justice.

The accusations infuriated Jean, and the argument heated up when Magath mentioned history and how the Eldians were the original sinners. Hange, on the other hand, was able to defuse the situation by telling Jean that after living in the outside world for a few months, he could no longer claim not to understand why Magath was so sceptical of them.

Annie interrogates Mikasa

Annie finally spoke up and asked if they could kill Eren, which surprised the others. Mikasa stated that killing him was not their only option, which Annie had predicted. She wondered if they would be able to persuade him, and if Eren, who had started a genocide killing off humanity outside of Paradis, would change his mind so easily.

Armin insisted that they couldn’t be sure if they talked to him, but Annie told Mikasa that she was certain she would end up safeguarding Eren if they tried to kill him and save Marley.

The already tense situation was exacerbated by the fact that both of them appeared ready to attack, but ultimately decided that they could wait until their interests actually conflicted.

Yelena’s truth

Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 episode 9 revealed yet another intriguing detail about Yelena’s identity. Magath tried to persuade Yelena to tell them where Eren might have sent his titans first, but she refused. Pieck discovered Yelena was a Marleyan after digging into her past.

She had become obsessed with the idea of saving the world after meeting Zeke, which had led her to join Zeke and carry out her elaborate ruse. She stated that saving the world was an appealing idea before abruptly changing the subject by revealing that all of them had killed countless people.

Jean, on the other hand, shrugged it off and continued to refuse to let Yelena bait him into another conflict. She did, however, succeed when she brought up Marco’s death.

How Marco died

Attack on Titan season 4 part 2 episode 9 revealed the truth about Marco’s death in Attack on Titan season 1. Annie admitted to removing Marco’s 3D-maneuver equipment, only for Reiner to interject and say that she had done so on his orders.

He defined how Marco had overheard him talking to Berthold and, in order to silence him without revealing their identity, they removed his gear and left him to be eaten by a titan.
