Since she can work well with Seer, Catalyst is one of the best Controller legends in Apex Legends. She has quickly established herself as a pillar of the metagame and is frequently used in high ranks and esports. She was the first transgender character to appear in the game, and Respawn Entertainment put a lot of effort into making sure the trans community was accurately represented.

Tressa (voiced by Meli Grant), a trans woman who appears to be a practising witch, is first introduced to us in the trailer. Rampart inquires about Tressa’s past after she has finished using crystals to predict Rampart’s future, which triggers a flashback.

Apex Legends is Catalyst Trans in the game:

Despite being the original non-binary character, Bloodhound does not identify as either gender. Because Bloodhound’s voice actor is trans, many players are unsure of who the first trans character in Apex Legends is. Bloodhound is not transgender, though Bloodhound’s voice actress, Allegra Clark, is. In Apex Legends, Catalyst holds the distinction of being the game’s first trans character.

In the scene, Tressa and three of her friends are hanging out in their makeshift clubhouse and talking about the state of the world. They are all citizens of Boreas, a planet where there has been a humanitarian crisis ever since Seer was born. There is martial law in place, and armed Spectres patrol the planet at night, enforcing curfew and generally instilling fear in the minds of the people of Boreas. A loudspeaker plays a female voice saying “HOPE IS NOT YET LOST” repeatedly. According to the public relations department for the manufacturing behemoth Hammond Robotics, there is a plan to save Cleo, the moon of Boreas.

According to Respawn Entertainment’s statement to GamesRadar, it worked closely with its staff members to understand how Catalyst would be portrayed. The developers said, “People who have gone through these things have spoken openly and honestly about difficult subjects. Additionally, there are those who haven’t gone through these experiences but are still very receptive to hearing about them and accepting criticism. With all of this information, they were simply attempting to create the best character they could, something we could be truly proud of.”

Casting transgender voice actor Meli Grant as the voice actor for Catalyst was a decision made by the studio in collaboration with GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation). The character design, voice lines, and backstory of Catalyst were all created with respect for trans people in mind.

Margo is being dragged away by Hammond security personnel when she turns around to look back. Margo detonates the bomb while still holding the detonator, destroying the Hammond city’s infrastructure and possibly taking her own life, based on Tressa’s response. When the story comes to an end, Rampart asks if “the rocks” (crystals) can tell Tressa, callsign Catalyst, what happened to Margo. Rampart is horrified. Catalyst rejects this and explains that Margo has returned to her homeworld in part to investigate her fate, further indicating that Season 15 will bring players a brand-new map.
