Overwatch 2 (opens in new tab) will lock heroes behind its battle pass, Blizzard said in a group interview with PC Gamer, but doing so won’t interfere with the game’s tactical, team-based combat. One of the welcome changes with Overwatch 2’s season three update is the expansion of ways to earn skins and cosmetics through withdrawal currency. But a small hiccup on the Battle Pass page is leaving players confused about exactly what currency they’re getting — and some are convinced there are malicious intentions involved. All players clam Blizzard is Trying To Trick Users Into Buying The Battle Pass in Overwatch 2:

Beginning in season three, all players can begin earning credits by leveling up their Battle Pass, regardless of whether they own a Battle Pass or not. Free players can earn up to 1,500 credits while Battle Pass owners can unlock an additional 500 credits.

Overwatch fans are outraged (opens in new tab) over a leak and subsequent confirmation from Blizzard VP and commercial leader Jon Spector that future heroes will be unlocked through free Battle Pass progression. This is a fundamental change from how heroes are released in the original game (they were immediately free for all) and many fans are concerned about how it affects the game’s rock-paper-scissors metagame.

But the credits that appear on the War Pass rewards page are listed with a yellow icon that uses the same color as the game’s premium currency, Overwatch Coins. Coins are purchased with real money and are used to purchase the Premium Battle Pass as well as Legendary Skins from the Heroes page. On the same Hero page, credits are clearly marked with a white icon on the listing for purchasable skins as well as the currency tracker in the top right corner. The two icon designs for credits and coins are also surprisingly similar.

Starting with Kiriko (Opens in new tab), Overwatch 2’s newest support hero, every new character in the game will be locked behind nine weeks of Tier 55 (Opens in new tab) (out of approximately 80 levels) (new Opens in) Tab) Battle Pass. “We want you to play games regularly during the season to get there,” Spector said, adding that those “regular players” could get the hero for free “before the season ends.” Buying the $10 Premium Battle Pass with 1,000 Overwatch Coins (a new currency) will give Kiriko instant access. And all new heroes won’t be available in the game’s competitive mode for the first two weeks of each season.

While this may be considered a simple mistake, it can be much more deceiving than that. At first glance, it might seem easy for players looking at the Battle Pass to earn free coins by level-up, allowing them to work their way to unlocking the premium Battle Pass for free. One of the most popular Live Services Games,Fortnite allows players who purchase the Season Battle Pass and earn enough premium currency by completing challenges to purchase the next Season Pass without spending real money.

While it’s unclear if Blizzard is intentionally trying to trick players into grinding or buying combat passes, many players have already determined that Blizzard has done so. One on the Overwatch subreddit wrote that “there’s no way to intentionally confuse people because the sizes are already so similar,” and several other players relayed similar sentiments.
