A Dream of Butterflies: Bungo Stray Dogs Season 4 Episode 9 Overview.

In exchange for helping the Detective Agency during their crisis, the Port Mafia boss Mori proposes that Yosano join their ranks

Despite Mori’s warnings that the transaction with Francis could be a trap, Yosano chooses to proceed. When Tanizaki and Kenji confront her about her refusal to join the Port Mafia, they encourage Tanizaki to offer himself as a candidate and ask Yosano about her history with Mori. Yosano then reveals that Fukuzawa and Mori have become enemies because of her, leading to the dissolution of their alliance.

Fourteen years prior, Yosano was recruited as a student medic by Mori to work on Tokoyami Island during the war’s final stages. With her ability to rapidly heal soldiers, Yosano became an essential asset to the war effort. During her time on the island, Yosano met a skilled private who gifted her a butterfly hairpin, thanking her for her work and calling her an “angel.”

The private shared his knowledge of the Skill Doctrine with Yosano, which allowed abilities to be used for a tactical advantage in the war. He also revealed that Mori had brought Yosano into the unit as part of his classified “Immortal Regiment” plan. Despite her ignorance of the scheme, Yosano only wished to help save the lives of others. However, Mori abruptly cut her off and directed her to other patients.

Following a devastating explosion that left the private’s unit on the brink of destruction, Yosano managed to heal their physical injuries, but she lamented that she could not help heal their emotional wounds. She expressed frustration at healing soldiers only for them to die again, feeling that her efforts were futile. The private reassured her that the five times she saved him (marked by the word “correct” on his dog tag) would lead to something positive happening in the world. He also thanked Yosano for allowing him to reunite with his family after saving him multiple times.

Yosano’s ability to heal soldiers in the midst of war forced them to continue fighting instead of retreating, leading to more horrors on the battlefield. One day, Mori ordered Yosano to heal a soldier so he could return to the fight, but she refused. She explained to Mori that abilities were changing the nature of war, and it was her duty to make the military understand this if they didn’t want the nation to fall. Mori shot the soldier, forcing Yosano to heal him.

With no chance for anyone to leave the battlefield, Yosano realized that her ability had taken away their human right to retreat. She made a list of soldiers who died unnecessarily because of her ability. One soldier attempted to kill Yosano to end their suffering, but he failed. Later, he contacted Yosano and confessed that her ability taught him that everyone has limits, but he called her an angel of death instead of an angel. He then committed suicide, leaving Yosano in shock.

After the war, Yosano was arrested for trying to blow up a carrier and placed in isolation. Mori found her three years later and tried to use her ability to fight the Port Mafia boss. Tanizaki wondered if the Agency rescued Yosano, but she revealed that it was Mori who found her.

Mori sought to use Yosano’s ability to make her the pillar of the Tripartite Framework and ensure the city’s peace. However, Fukuzawa intervened, condemning Mori’s heartless and hellish plan for Yosano. Fukuzawa’s stance clashed with Mori’s, leading to the end of their alliance.

Ranpo moved Yosano away from the battlefield and returned her missing butterfly pin, which he found in the carrier. Yosano asked Ranpo for guidance on what she should do next, considering the destructive nature of her ability. Ranpo advised her to live with and join the Armed Detective Agency, not for her ability, but for her kindness. Overwhelmed with emotion, Yosano wept.

As they headed to the Mafia base, Yosano, Tanizaki, and Kenji resolved to save the Agency, the only place where Yosano could truly belong. Yosano was determined to protect the Agency and find a way to live without her ability’s destructive influence. She ushered her fellow detectives out the door with unwavering determination to succeed.
