Southampton thrashed Brentford 4-1 in the Premier League fixture at St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday. Jan Bednarek opened the scoring for the hosts early in the match before Brentford equalized through Vitaly Janelt. Saints restored their advantage eight minutes before half-time courtesy of an unfortunate own goal from goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez. Four minutes after the break, Armando Broja extended Southampton’s lead with a breakaway move. Substitute Che Adams completed the drubbing with Southampton’s fourth of the night.

In a game that was originally postponed because of COVID-19 outbreak in the Brentford squad, Southampton took the lead inside the opening five minutes. James Ward-Prowse’s corner from the left flank was headed home by Bednarek from close range at the near post.

Although Brentford were struggling to get going, they did get the equalizer against the run of play in the 23rd minute. Bryan Mbeumo did well to deliver a brilliant cross from the right flank and Janelt slotted home past Fraser Forster with a beautiful first-time volley from inside the box.

The Saints played positively and once again got their nose in front, eight minutes before the break. Ibrahima Diallo’s low shot from the edge of the box rebounded off the upright before hitting Brentford goalkeeper Fernandez’s hand and nestling inside the net.

There was no stopping the home side in the second half. In the 49th minute, Broja stretched Southampton’s lead. Oriol Romeu played a brilliant through ball to release Broja and the Albanian forward maintained his composure to slot the ball past an advancing Fernandez and into the net.

Our attitude today was don’t give up: Hasenhuttl

The hosts scored their fourth goal of the night in the 70th minute. Adams did brilliantly to control a long aerial ball from the back and lift it beyond Fernandez. Although there was a late surge from the Bees, Southampton defense stood firm to maintain the three goal lead and take all three points.

Victory sees Hasenhuttl’s side, who are now unbeaten in four games, move above Brentford into the 11th spot in the Premier League table. Meanwhile the heavy defeat pushed Brentford down to 13th place.

Southampton boss Hasenhuttl said after the match: “Our attitude today was don’t give up, go for every ball. You could see there is a reason Brentford are having a good season and we knew we had to keep them away from our goal, they are dangerous on set pieces and around the box.We had quick strikers up front and it was a very controlled and disciplined performance today.

He added “It was an important result for us. Unbeaten in five games now and even longer at home. We spoke about getting a second and third goal and being able to play calmer football so that was fantastic to watch. Today was one of the best performances at home.”
