Austria national team has announced that Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick will be their new manager on a two-year contract. At the same time, it was also confirmed that the 63-year-old will remain in a consultancy role at Old Trafford beyond this season. The latest development will surely come as a shock to many fans. It was believed that the German will be a full-time consultant at Manchester United once his interim period got over. With Ajax boss Erik ten Hag set to join United at the end of the season, Rangnick was expected to work with him closely from behind the scenes to help the Red Devils get back to his glory days.

Ralf Rangnick’s contract is until 2024

However, the latest development means Rangnick will have to be juggling two jobs at the same time. It is not clear how that will work, only time will tell. As of now, the German has been appointed as the new Austrian manager until 2024 in a press conference by the Austrian FA. There is a clause inserted in his contract which details that Rangnick’s deal will be renewed for a further two years if the country qualifies for the 2024 European Championship in his native Germany.

What Rangnick said?

“It’s an honour for me to take on the role of team boss. I’m particularly excited about the prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success,” said Rangnick, as per the Austrian FA website. “I will take over as national team manager of Austria at the end of the season but will continue my consultancy with Manchester United,” Rangnick was then quoted as saying by the Manchester United website.

Franco Foda resigned from Austria team recently

Recently, Austria’s previous manager, Franco Foda, stepped down from his role after failing to help his team book a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Rangnick’s main job is to help Austria qualify for the 2024 Euros. He further added: “I’m really looking forward to playing my part in helping United become a real force again. It is an honour for me to take on the role of [Austria] manager. The prospect of contesting the European Championships in Germany with a young team hungry for success fills me with great anticipation.”

Rangnick replaced Solskjaer last November

Last November, Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United and was appointed as the interim manager until the end of the current season. Then, he was expected to take over a consultancy role at the Old Trafford. However, Rangnick has not been able to turn United’s fortunes around with the club languishing in the 6th spot in the Premier League table. With Manchester United having only three games left to play this season, the prospect of finishing in the top four places is all but over. Erik ten Hag will become the permanent manager at the end of the season after his duties with Ajax are completed. He will have a massive job at hand to turn the fortunes of the Old Trafford outfit.
