It goes without saying that Premier League is the most popular league across the world, and arguably one of the hardest leagues to play. Not everyone has been able to flourish in the league, leading them to be benched or transferred to another league. The physically demanding and fast-paced league is not for everyone. However, there were some who were able to crack the code and thrive for years in the English top flight. Those players were able to carry their team’s responsibilities on their shoulders for a very long time, scoring important goals week in and week out.

Let us take a look at the all-time top three goalscorers of the English Premier League:

Andrew Cole (187 goals, 414 appearances)

The former English striker has been mainly known for his time with Manchester United during his playing days. The 50-year-old has played for a variety of teams in the English top division but it was during his six-year stay with United at Old Trafford from 1995-2001, Cole attained world class status. After joining the Red Devils from Newcastle United, Cole needed little time to settle down at the red half of Manchester.

During his time at Old Trafford, he had won eight major trophies. It also includes the incredible Treble – the Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League – during 1999. Besides, he also played for Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Sunderland in the English top division. He is the third-highest goalscorer in the history of the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney (208 goals, 491 appearances)

Rooney is considered to be one of the best players of his generation. The former English forward’s versatility made him a valuable addition to any team he played for. However, his versatility also prevented him from nailing down one position in the team, which some experts believe is the reason behind Rooney not reaching the legendary level of his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. Nonetheless, Rooney will always be regarded as a Manchester United legend by their club fans.

He is United’s top goalscorer of all time, by netting 253 goals in all competitions. The 208 goals Rooney has scored in the league make him the Premier League’s second-top scorer of all time. He also has 103 assists to his name in the Premier League. Currently, Rooney is the manager of EFL Championship club Derby County.

Alan Shearer (260 goals, 441 appearances)

The former English striker is arguably one of the best players the Premier League has ever seen. Shearer is the top goalscorer in the league’s history. Largely known for his playing days with Newcastle United, Shearer will go down the history as one of the best strikers ever to set foot on a football field. The 51-year-old has also played for Blackburn Rovers and Southampton.

Shearer had won the 1994-95 Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers and also bagged two successive Golden Boots in the league. However, it was his spell with Newcastle, which many remember to date. He joined his hometown club Newcastle United in the summer of 1996 and broke multiple records before retiring at the end of the 2005-06 season. Besides, he has scored 30 goals in 63 appearances for the England national team.
