Chelsea defeated Norwich City 3-1 in the Premier League fixture at Carrow Road on Thursday. Trevoh Chalobah nodded Chelsea ahead early on before Mason Mount doubled the lead with a powerful strike that went past Tim Krul after good work from Kai Havertz. Although Norwich pulled on back through Teemu Pukki from the penalty spot in the second-half, Havertz sealed Chelsea’ victory with a late strike. The win helped Thomas Tuchel’s side to 56 points from 27 games, eight points above fourth-placed Arsenal who have two games in hand.

The Blues put their off-field problems behind them to take the lead inside the opening three minutes. Mason Mount’s corner kick from the left flank was headed home by Chalobah at the near post.

Chelsea were playing a high-pressing game forcing the hosts to concede ball possession outside their own box and Havertz’ effort from outside the box was saved by Krul. And their persistent pressure helped them to extend their lead in the 14th minute. Havertz cut inside from the left and laid it to Mount inside the box, and the Englishman fired home past Krul into the top corner.

In response, Mathias Norman’s long-range strike went over the bar before Christoph Zimmermann’s deflected effort was well collected by Edouard Mendy. Andreas Christensen’s free-header from Mount’s corner-kick side-netted before Matteo Kovacic’s half-volley from the edge of the box went just over the crossbar.

Norwich struggled to deal with Chelsea’ intensity and were fortunate to go into the break within two goals of their visitors. A double change at the interval added a bit more spark into their game, with Milot Rashica’s raw pace and direct running, as well as a change in shape from manager Dean Smith, causing the Blues all sorts of problems after the break.

Havertz seals the win

Rashica cut inside from the left and blasted over the bar before Chalobah was penalised for a handball inside the box by a VAR review. Pukki stepped up and converted the spot-kick to halve the deficit for the hosts on 69 minutes.

Despite plenty of bright build-up play, Norwich never had enough cutting edge to threaten an equaliser. Meanwhile at the other end, substitute Romelu Lukaku’s effort deflected just wide for a corner before Havertz scored Chelsea’s third goal of the night.

The German international collected the ball from N’Golo Kante just inside the box and smashed it into the top corner in the final minute of normal time. The result left Norwich rooted the bottom of the table, five points adrift of 17th placed Everton.
