Mason Greenwood news: Manchester United forward to remain on bail over rape investigation

The 20-year-old was taken into police custody in late January on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood will remain on bail until-June over allegations he raped and assaulted a young Woman, the police said on Friday. The 20-year-old was taken into police custody in late January on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman after images and videos were posted online and police were granted additional time to question him. He was subsequently arrested again on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill, Greater Manchester police confirmed. Three days after his initial arrest, the Englishman was released on bail.

Greenwood arrested on suspicion of rape

In an update on the investigation, Greater Manchester Police said: “We are continuing to investigate a report made to us on Sunday 30 January of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence. A 20-year-old man arrested that day on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman, and threats to kill, remains on bail. An application has been made to the courts to have his bail extended beyond Saturday 30 April, but the hearing isn’t expected to be until mid-June.The suspect will remain on conditional bail until the date of the court hearing.”

Sponsorship deals canceled

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online, the Red Devils had suspended the England international while the investigation remains ongoing. Greenwood’s bail was set to expire on 30 April but GMP has now confirmed that this has been extended. Nike, which provides the forward’s boots suspended its sponsorship the deal with Greenwood and Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on the Fifa 22 game. Greenwood no longer features in the popular football simulating gaming title in offline modes and has been removed from the United squad. However, he is still available to use on the FIFA Ultimate Team game mode and can still be traded on the game mode’s transfer market, according to reports.

Greenwood’s career derails

Having made his United debut in 2019, aged just 17 years, Greenwood has played for the club 129 times and has scored 35 goals after progressing up through the youth ranks. The young forward had signed a new deal in February 2021, which will keep him at Old Trafford until at least 2025. The youngster rose through the ranks at United and quickly established himself in the senior squad. The forward made his international debut for the Three Lions against Iceland on September, 2020. He was expected to make it big in the game but now finds himself on the verge of derailing his career.
