Marcus Rashford scored a last-gasp winner as Manchester United defeated West Ham United 1-0 in the Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Saturday to move to the fourth spot in the points table. Ralf Rangnick has now picked up 17 points from a possible 24 as United’s interim boss. The game looked certain to be heading for a draw, when Rangnick’s all three substitutes combined to break the deadlock in the 93rd minute of the game. Edinson Cavani provided the assist for Rashford to secure all three points for the Red Devils against a resilient West Ham side.

The first half was a cagey affair as both sides failed to create too many clear cut chances. Although West Ham started brightly, Manchester United slowly took control of the game. Cristiano Ronaldo was inches away from getting to the end of Bruno Fernandes’ cross. Not even a single shot on target was registered in the opening half.

The first shot on target came three minutes into the second half. Alphonso Areola, who was making his Premier League debut for West Ham in goal, made a decent save to keep out Fred’s powerful drive from inside the box. Few minutes later, at the other end, Jarrod Browen’s effort from the edge of the box side netted before Rafael Varane’s free-header from a corner flew just over the crossbar.

Rangnick introduced Rashford, Cavani and Martial insearch of the winner but it was the Hammers who went close. Four minutes from time, Tomas Soucek’s header from a corner-kick went agoisingly wide and David de Dea pushed a deflected cross past the post.

Rashford’s winner

David Moyes’ men pushed forward for the winner and were caught by United on the counter. Brown lost the ball on the right flank and Alex Telles’ overhead ball was headed towards the path of Ronaldo by Ryan Frederick. Ronaldo played the ball to Martial who slid it to Cavani on the left side of the box.

The Uruguayan’s low cross was slotted home by Rashford at the far post. The VAR checked a potential offside against Cavani in the build-up to the goal but there was to be no reprieve for Moyes’ men as United leapfrogged above West Ham into the fourth spot.

Marcus Rashford was delighted with his match-winning moment. He has now scored twice in two games having failed find the back of the net in his 11 appearances in all competitions.

“Very happy today and a very big game against an opponent who are very tight with us at the moment, so it was very important that we got the win,” he said.

“You might not see it now but, come the end of the season, three points can be the difference between being in or out of the top four.

“I’m pleased we managed to get them today and we have to use that as motivation.”
