Manchester United’s disappointing campaign is nearing its climax. When United players take to the pitch on Monday night to face Brentford in the Premier League it will be the side’s final home game of the season. Sitting sixth, the Red Devils have 55 points from 35 games in the Premier League table. With only three games left to play this campaign, a top-four finish is all but over. However, they still need to finish the season in top-six positions to seal a Europa League place. For that to happen, Manchester United need to finish above West Ham United, who currently occupy the 7th spot having secured 52 points from 35 games.

It is not the season that United fans expected at the start of last August, especially following the incredible summer transfer window they had at the beginning of the campaign. After spending six years at Manchester United during his first stint, Portuguese skipper Cristiano Ronaldo had made a sensational return to Old Trafford from Juventus in the summer of 2021. It was an unexpected signing. Not to mention that Manchester United had already made two big-name signings earlier in the window – Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund and Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

Not the season Manchester United fans had in mind

Manchester United were expected to be a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. But the reality was far from it. A poor run of form saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer losing his job. Ralf Rangnick was appointed as the interim manager until the end of the season. However, things have not worked out for him either, as the star-studded United team is languishing at the 6th spot currently. Despite the poor run of results, Rangnick is hoping to end the season on a high.

The upcoming match will be his last game at Old Trafford as manager and also for some players it will be their final match in this ground playing for the United shirt. Asked whether that will make it more significant, Rangnick was quoted as saying by his club’s website, “Yeah, but it’s significant for everybody in the club, not only for the players who might not be here anymore. It’s also important that we show a top mentality and attitude and performance at home in the last game.”

What Thomas Tuchel told Ralf Rangnick?

Rangnick also gave a small insight into what Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel told Rangnick about Old Trafford before their 1-1 draw on Thursday night. Rangnick, however, first start speaking about managing Manchester United at Old Trafford in these last few months, “In most of the games, I enjoyed it but obviously we had some games where we were just 1-0 up and gave away too many points. In those moments, it’s not so enjoyable but overall the support by the fans is massive, it’s great. It’s one of the biggest things this club has. The stadium… I spoke to Thomas Tuchel before the game and he said to me ‘what a stadium, what an atmosphere’, and this is really great for everybody. I enjoyed that very much.”

‘It would be good to get three points’

Reflecting on the impressive season Brentford are having and how difficult it would be to play them, Rangnick said, “You could even see that in their first game, I remember watching it on TV. They won 2-0 against Arsenal, they won two or three weeks ago 4-1 at Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge. We had our problems in the first game, in the first half. We could have been 2-0 down and we could only manage to change and turn the game in the second half. This will again not be an easy game for us.” Asked how important it would be to end the final home match on a high, he replied, “As I said, very important both for the fans but also as a boost for the new season. For everyone it would be good to get three points in this game.”
