Liverpool climbed to the top of the Premier League points table for the first time this year courtesy of a 2-0 win over struggling Watford at Anfield on Saturday. Diogo Jota put the Reds ahead mid-way through the first half before Fabinho sealed the win from the penalty spot late in the game. The win helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to move two points clear of Manchester City, who travel to Burnley later on the day. Meanwhile it was Liverpool’s 10th straight league win and having trailed Man City by 14 points in January, they are now one step ahead in the title race.

Watford, who are battling relegation, desperately needed three points and started the match with some urgency. Cucho Hernandez and Juraj Kucka got early chances but failed to get the better of Liverpool keeper Alisson.

Liverpool took the lead on 22 minutes when Jota got on the end of right-back Joe Gomez’ perfect cross to head home past Ben Foster and into the net. It was the Portuguese international’s 20th goal of the season and his third in as many appearances in a red shirt.

Although the hosts were in complete control of the game, there was a nervousness around Anfield as Watford were desperately trying for an equaliser and nearly got it when Sarr made a darting run down the left flank and cut the ball back for Joao Pedro, but the 20-year-old’s effort went wide.

The hosts had to wait till the 89th minute to get their second of the night. Kucka wrestled Jota to the ground from a corner and the referee pointed to the spot. Fabinho stepped up and converted the spot-kick to seal the win and take all three points for the Reds.

Klopp celebrated his 250th game in charge of Liverpool with his side climbing to league’s summit. Meanwhile the attention quickly shifts to Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg encounter with Benfica.

Watford remained at the 18th spot with 22 points from 30 games, three points adrift of the safe zone while Liverpool moved to 72 points from 30 games.
