Liverpool’s incredible season keeps getting better with another memorable outing. Jurgen Klopp’s side overcame a first-half scare against Villarreal to reach the Champions League final once again on Tuesday night. The Reds found themselves 2-0 down at half time, meaning the aggregate scores between the two sides became level. Liverpool won the first leg 2-0 at Anfield last week, however, the Spanish side put up a brilliant fightback to level the score in the first half of the second leg. But the home side were of no match to the Reds in the second period, as the visitors scored thrice through Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane to clinch the match 3-2 and reach the final on a 5-2 aggregate win.

Liverpool will play three cup finals this season

Jurgen Klopp’s side will now play every possible match this season. In all the competitions, they have reached the final. Having already won the Carabao Cup final earlier in the year against Chelsea, Liverpool have also reached the final of the Champions League and the FA Cup. Their opponent in the big European final is still not clear, however, they will face Chelsea yet again in the FA Cup final. In the Premier League, they will play 38 games, just like any other team.

As a result, Liverpool will play 63 matches at the end of the campaign in all competitions. The two domestic cups – Carabao Cup and FA Cup – each has six matches, while the Champions League will have 13 games. The Premier League amounts to 38. Overall, the Reds will play in every possible match they could officially compete in this season. It clearly demonstrates how Liverpool have become the team to fear in all of Europe right now.

When did it happen last time?

The 2000-01 season was the last time Liverpool played every possible match in all competitions. Back then they won three trophies – League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup. In the Premier League, they had finished third and this incredible feat was achieved under Gerard Houllier. 21 years later, the current Liverpool side have repeated this milestone.

What is the highest number of matches Liverpool played in a single season?

Although to make one thing clear, the 63 matches Liverpool will end up playing this campaign will not be the most number of matches in a single season for the Reds. In the 1983-84 season, Liverpool played 67 games and won three trophies in the process. Now, Jurgen Klopp can help them do one better. With the Reds sitting second in the league table and only one point behind leaders Manchester City, their quadruple quest is very much alive.

Considering the form of Liverpool and their hunger to succeed, nothing is impossible for them at the moment. Having a manager of Klopp’s stature allows them to keep aiming high and never settle for anything less than the victory. They do have a difficult path ahead in the remaining weeks of the season, but their quest to reach invincibility is very much alive.
