Manchester United interim coach Ralf Rangnick insists that the uncertainty over the next United manager is no excuse for another lacklustre performance in the 1-0 loss against Everton on Saturday. Anthony Gordon’s lone strike mid-way through the first half was enough to secure all three points for the relegation-battling Everton. Meanwhile the German interim, who took charge of the team from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November hasn’t been able to get them back on track, having won eight of his first 17 Premier League games as United boss.

It is unclear who the next permanent United manager would be. Although the club hasn’t made any official announcement, the British Media reports that Dutchman Erik ten Hag is lined up. Meanwhile the Red Devils are struggling to find any kind of rhythm and look like a bunch of talented individuals not knowing what their actual role in the team is.

“I don’t see any connection between this (new manager search) and today’s display, and I will not allow anyone to have this as an alibi or excuse,” Rangnick told reporters.

“It doesn’t matter if the new manager will be announced in five, 15 or 20 days, the players should be eager to play Champions League, but as long as we play like today they don’t deserve it.

“Whenever we score first we have the confidence to win games, but when we concede first we lose our way a bit. If you don’t score against a team who conceded three against Burnley in midweek then you don’t deserve anything.”

Anthony Gordon’s winner

Rangnick’s side started pretty well at the Goodison Park, forcing Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to make a couple of early saves. But the hosts took the lead, against the run of play, when Gordon’s shot from the edge of the box deflected past David de Gea into the back of the net.

After conceding the goal, Everton upped their game. Though United had the majority of the ball possession, it was the hosts who looked threatening from the counter-attacks. Gordon went clear on the right flank but couldn’t find Richarlison with his low cross.

“You could see they (United players) wanted to win the game, but after conceding the goal we lost some confidence,” Rangnick added. “We just struggle with the level of expectation.

“We wanted to play more aggressive than we did before. We needed to be more keen to win second balls and pin them back and we didn’t do that. That is our problem right now.”

The Red Devils will next face Norwich City at Old Trafford before traveling to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
