Manchester United’s search for a new manager is all set to end soon if the latest reports are to be believed. The Athletic has stated the Red Devils have reached an agreement in principle with Erik ten Hag to take over the club’s permanent manager role. In what is believed to be a verbal agreement, ten Hag will pen down a contract that could reportedly last for four years. It is also reported by the same source that his current club Ajax are well aware of the situation, however, they still need to reach a deal with the Premier League club.

There are still pending details and documentation that need to be finalised by Manchester United. It is also believed that there will be no announcement on this matter until after Ajax play their Dutch Cup final against PSV Eindhoven on April 17. This comes as no surprise as the Red Devils would ideally want to respect the Dutch club and their manager, with their team set to play a final and are also the favourites to be crowned the Eredivisie champions. Besides, Ten Hag’s coaching staff will also be finalised shortly, adds the report.

‘No announcement expected this week’

Meanwhile, popular Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, has also confirmed the latest development. Romano, who has been regarded as one of the trusted sources in dealing with football transfers, stated that there will be no announcement expected this week.

Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “Sources close to Erik ten Hag confirm @David_Ornstein report: his appointment as new Man United manager is at final stages. #MUFC

“Nothing signed yet – back room staff to be decided. No announcement expected this week. Ajax and Man Utd will be in contact about €2m clause.”

If the reports are to be believed then ten Hag would have beaten Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino for the coveted job. Ever since former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by United in November, these two candidates were reportedly front-runners to replace him. Since then, Ralf Rangnick has been doing the job on an interim basis.

Erik ten Hag beats Mauricio Pochettino for the job?

Notably, Pochettino has been linked with United for a very long time. The possibility first emerged even before Ole was appointed as the club’s full-time manager. Since then, Pochettino has been regularly linked with the possibility of joining the Old Trafford outfit. If the latest reports are to be believed then the former Tottenham Hotspur manager might miss out on the Manchester United job yet again.

Fans also seemed to develop a liking for Erik ten Hag, thanks to his exploits with the Dutch giants. Ten Hag, who has been the head coach of Ajax since December 2017, has caught the eye of Europe with his beautiful and fearless football. Despite Ajax not having the quality of players to match the European giants, the Dutch side fought toe-to-toe with every team in the Champions League under ten Hag.

This was evident in 2019 when he incredibly guided Ajax to the Champions League semifinal before losing to Spurs. On the way to the last four, Ajax had beaten then defending champions Real Madrid and Juventus in that year’s competition.

Despite the fact that some of the team’s key players have left for other European heavyweights, Ten Hag has still managed to keep them playing at the same high level. He has also been credited with building two Ajax sides so far in his reign and helped them both dominate their opponents domestically and in Europe.
