Edinson Cavani has suffered an injury setback while on duty with his national team. The centre-forward picked up the latest injury during Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Chile. In their final World Cup qualifying game, Cavani was substituted off in less than 30 minutes due to what appears to be a calf problem. His replacement Luis Suarez opened the scoring late on before Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde sealed the win in the 90th minute for Uruguay. The South American nation had already booked a ticket to this year’s tournament.

However, it is a major blow for the 35-year-old who had only recently returned from a thigh problem. With the international break over, it is not clear for how long Edinson Cavani will be out of action for Manchester United. Cavani, who made substitute appearances for United against Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid recently, also came off the bench in Uruguay’s first game of the international break at home to Peru. Fellow United winger, Facundo Pellistri, who is currently on loan at Alaves, was unavailable for La Celeste due to suspension.

How much will Manchester United miss Edinson Cavani?

The centre-forward has been enduring a stop-start season and has missed a good number of matches for the Reds this campaign. To put it into better context, Cavani has not been available for 23 games from a possible 40 fixtures for Manchester United across all competitions this season. He has played 17 games this campaign and has found the back of the net only twice. Both goals came in the Premier League.

Next up for Ralf Rangnick’s side is Leicester City in the league on Saturday. It is highly unlikely Cavani will be a part of that match. It is not only about the upcoming game against the Foxes, the entire April is crucial for the Red Devils. United will also take on Everton, Norwich, Liverpool and Arsenal as they try to stay in the top four race, which is fast becoming a distant dream.

Currently, United are on 50 points from 29 Premier League games and are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand, and one point behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur. However, there are still nine games for United to play this campaign and anything can happen in that period.

Last season, Cavani played an important role in the Red Devils finishing second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final. But injuries have plagued his current campaign. If he misses a significant number of games in the coming weeks, United’s chances of finishing in the top four will become even more difficult.
