Manchester United’s dismal effort at the Amex Stadium was duly punished by a well-organized Brighton team, which won 4-0 in front of a cheering home crowd. The embarrassing result means United will now have their worst ever Premier League tally. After securing 58 points from 37 games, the Red Devils can only reach 61 this season. It will be lesser than the 64 points Manchester United managed when David Moyes was the manager in the 2013-14 season. It was a flat performance by United and they deserved to get nothing out of the game. As much as one might praise Brighton for their performance, criticism of United is indeed justified.

Cristiano Ronaldo caught smiling for the third goal

One of the eye-catching moments in the match was when Cristiano Ronaldo smiled at the manner in which Manchester United conceded the third goal. In truth, it was not only about that goal, as the match started with Moises Caicedo putting the home side in front in the first half. United were lucky to go into the break with a single goal deficit, which illustrated how much the hosts dominated the opening period. In the second half, goals from Marc Cucurella, Pascal Gross and Leandro Trossard secured Brighton a comfortable victory.

However, it was the third goal scored by Gross which led to Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo laughing in disbelief. The frustration was understandable. Ronaldo used to play for teams that compete for big titles both domestically and in Europe. Even during his first stint at Old Trafford, United used to be a force to be reckoned with. However, times have changed since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. Former Manchester United striker Dion Dublin highlighted the moment of Ronaldo laughing and said it “summed up” the Red Devils’ display on Saturday.

‘If you don’t do the basics, you’ve got no chance’

Erik ten Hag will become the permanent manager of Manchester United in the summer after interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s time comes to an end. However, Dublin criticised the club for taking too long to appoint a permanent manager. “It’s Man United’s fault for not getting the right man in to take the manager’s job and give him time,” Sky Sports pundit Dublin said. “There’s a couple of potentially great players there. However, as good as you think you are, if you’re not willing to do the basics of the game, no way can you implement your own skill. If you don’t do the basics, you’ve got no chance.”

Speaking about Ronaldo’s smile, Dubin said, “One of the tell-tale signs was after one of the goals Ronaldo was laughing. Is he laughing at his players? Is he saying what’s going on here, am I at Man United or not? That summed up today.” Another Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness, who was also present in the studio, responded to that comment, saying, “He’s thinking, ‘Last time I had Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, now I’ve got this lot’.”
