It is a miracle that Christian Eriksen is still playing – never mind producing top performances week in and week out. After the scary ordeal the Danish midfielder went through last June, it is hard to believe that Eriksen is playing at the top level and is still continuing to pull the strings on a football pitch. Last summer, Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s opening Euro 2020 match against Finland as he went to take a throw-in. After suffering a cardiac arrest during the first half of his nation’s 1-0 Group B loss to Finland, the playmaker had to be resuscitated on the pitch at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.

Back then it was still not clear whether Eriksen would kick a football again. Almost a year later, the former Inter Milan midfielder has switched from Italy to the Premier League to play for Brentford. He has also made his return to the national team and made a dream comeback. Within a minute after his comeback for Denmark, he scored against the Netherlands. The playmaker replaced fellow midfielder Jesper Lindström before the second half. He was welcomed onto the pitch with a huge round of applause from everyone inside the Johan Cruyff Arena, including opposition manager Louis van Gaal.

In no time after coming back from the bench, the Dane produced a beautiful finish to reduce the deficit for his country. Even though Denmark ended up losing the match, Christian Eriksen’s spectacular return to international football was all that mattered to fans.

Christian Eriksen making the most of his second life

The moment Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s match against Finland last June, the stadium was filled with sorrow. Some fans even feared the worst. It is an unpleasant memory that will forever stay in the minds of football fans who witnessed the moment.

However, Eriksen never gave up. He got his health sorted and his footballing career back on track. Even though his time with Serie A giants Inter Milan had to be cut short, the 30-year-old has made the most of his newfound opportunity in the Premier League.

On the back of his successful heart implant operation following his collapse, Eriksen signed for Brentford in January and made his competitive return to football with the Premier League club in February.

It was against Newcastle United, Eriksen was introduced in the 52nd minute for his Brentford debut. The Danish midfielder received a standing ovation as he made his first appearance since that horrific incident at Euro 2020. Both sets of fans, including Newcastle players, applauded as Eriksen walked onto the football pitch.

Eriksen takes Stamford Bridge by storm

Coming into the clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Christian Eriksen already had an assist to his name. The Danish midfielder played a crucial role in helping Brentford beat relegation rivals Burnley. With just five minutes left, at the Brentford Community Stadium, the game was still goalless. However, Eriksen delivered a fabulous cross to Ivan Toney, who put the home side in front with a fantastic diving header.

On Saturday evening, Chelsea were the clear favourites ahead of the match. But to Brentford’s credit, they never played like an underdog team and took the game to the home side at every possible instance. They held a solid defensive line, hurried Chelsea players with their pressing and counter attacked brilliantly.

The only way Chelsea were able to beat their defensive line was through a thunderbolt of a strike by Antonio Rudiger. Despite the setback, the visitors continued to play their natural game and got their reward. Vitaly Janelt netted the equaliser before the moment of the evening arrived. Bryan Mbeumo set up Christian Eriksen to put the visitors in front of the loud visiting support.

Brentford added two more goals that evening, however, the day will be remembered for a memorable moment produced by Eriksen. Overall, the result will have a lot of significance attached to it for various reasons. It will go down as one of the best results in Brentford’s season and history; one of their best ever away days in the English top flight and many more.

But for football fans across the world, it will be all about Eriksen’s moment. The miracle man is back where he belongs. More than his goal or his overall performance, the biggest takeaway from his outing is hope. With his comeback, he provides hope to many more people who have undergone similar trauma. Anything is possible with sheer determination and Eriksen is the best example.
