Chelsea will play the penultimate game of their season on Thursday night when they face Leicester City in the Premier League. For the Blues, there are still two games left this season and both are at home. On paper, it is a very interesting clash but in reality, the two sides have very little to play for on Thursday. Thomas Tuchel’s side have clinched a Champions League spot following Arsenal’s defeat at Newcastle United on Monday night. Third-placed Chelsea now have 70 points – two more than fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur and four more than fifth-placed Arsenal. Moreover, both the North London sides have only one game left in the season, but the Blues have an additional game in hand, which they will play against the Foxes on Thursday.

Chelsea can still drop out of the third-place if Antonio Conte’s Spurs win their final match and the Blues lose their remaining two games. Even then, they will not drop out of the coveted top four positions. All they need is one point to secure the third spot. Chelsea’s goal difference of 42 compared to Tottenham’s 24 will be enough to help them finish above Spurs if the two clubs finish on the same number of points. Arsenal cannot mathematically leapfrog Thomas Tuchel’s side following their 2-0 defeat against Newcastle on Monday night.

On the other hand, Leicester City endured a mixed season. They had their promising moments but were not able to fight for the top four places like the last two campaigns. The Foxes find themselves in the ninth spot, having accumulated 48 points from 36 games. They cannot finish in any of the European places and all they can do is dislodge Wolves from the eight place. Overall, this match has very little significance in the grand scheme of things and both will mainly play for pride.

Probable line-up

Chelsea are fresh from the penalty shootout heartbreak against Liverpool in the FA Cup final at the weekend. It was their last meaningful match left in the campaign. Now they have to put that defeat behind them and produce a performance to remember for the Stamford Bridge crowd. Playing the additional 30 minutes and a penalty shootout after the regulation 90 minutes might have an impact on certain players’ fitness. One thing is for sure – Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi are out of the Thursday night game.

However, the health situation of Timo Werner and Kai Havertz is not clear after both players missed the FA Cup final. Tuchel might have to assess the situation about them before making a final call. Among the positives, N’Golo Kante returning to fitness will be a big boost for the Blues. For Leicester, during the win over Watford, Nampalys Mendy was taken off early in the match due to sickness. It is not clear whether he can make the final cut. However, Wilfred Ndidi, Ryan Bertrand and Ricardo Pereira will remain out of contention.

Chelsea possible line-up: Mendy, James, Azpilicueta, Chalobah, Rudiger, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Ziyech, Mount, Lukaku

Leicester City possible line-up: Schmeichel, Castagne, Fofana, Evans, Justin, Albrighton, Tielemans, Dewsbury-Hall, Maddison, Barnes, Vardy
