Manchester United’s disappointing season reached a new low at the Amex Stadium, as the Red Devils were hammered 4-0 by a well-drilled Brighton side. In a season of multiple lows, United hit the bottom yet again on Saturday night when they were thoroughly outplayed by a mid-table team. Sitting sixth in the table, Manchester United have 58 points from 37 games in the Premier League, while Brighton are ninth with 47 points from 36 games. During the match, the home crowd was celebrating with joy as the away supporters were left shell-shocked. The disappointed Man United supporters did not hide their frustration at the team’s poor showing at the Amex Stadium.

Supporters chant ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’

“You’re not fit to wear the shirt” chants started to echo from the away end at the Amex Stadium after Manchester United conceded the fourth goal. Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes gave a brutally honest assessment of the chant, saying he agrees with the supporters. Asked about those chants, Fernandes told Sky Sports, “What we did, and by myself, was not enough to be in a Manchester United shirt. I accept that. It is not good enough. They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result. A little bit of everything went wrong. Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now.”

Meanwhile, interim manager Ralf Rangnick apologised to Manchester United supporters on the back of the 4-0 defeat at Brighton, which he described as “humiliating”. Asked if the performance was the worst of his tenure, Rangnick told Sky Sports, “Yes, it was from the first to the last minute. We were second best. We can only apologise to the supporters. It was a terrible performance and a humiliating defeat.”

Ralf Rangnick: We couldn’t stop them

“We gave them too much time, too much space. We couldn’t get into a position to stop them playing through our lines. The game plan was completely different. We told the players to be as compact as possible and then to release pressure on them. We couldn’t stop them. I don’t think the players ignored the game plan but they weren’t able to stop them. We gave them too much space and time. When you give technically good players this space, this is what can happen.”

Rangnick then went on to explain the reason behind bringing Edinson Cavani in the second half and how big a risk it was for the team. He also confessed that they were “second best” on the night. “In the second half we took the risk to bring on Cavani to play as a second striker, but in hindsight it was too much of a risk to play in a 4-4-2 against them but we had to change the energy. Today we were second best. As a team we didn’t defend at all. We couldn’t stop them,” he added.
