Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard backs midfielder Jacob Ramsey for England call up after his brace against Leeds United in the thrilling 3-3 Premier League draw at Villa Park on Wednesday. Philippe Coutinho canceled out Daniel James’ opener before Jacob Ramsey put the hosts ahead. Then,  Ramsey completed his brace to make the score 3-1 for Villa. However, Leeds grabbed a lifeline as James scored his second of the night  on the stroke of half-time. After the break, Diego Llorent brought the scores level again.

It was Villa who started the match brightly but James scored the opening goal for Leeds against the run of play. The winger fired home past Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez on nine minutes.

Villa deservedly leveled the score in the 30th minute. Matty Cash’s low cross from the right found Coutinho inside the box. The Brazilian took one touch and steered the ball low into the corner.

In the 38th minute, Villa went ahead courtesy of Ramsey’s goal. Coutinho was involved once again as he produced a sublime turn to get past Luke Ayling in the middle of the park, before playing a brilliant through ball to release Ramsey on goal. The 20-year-old midfielder finished past Illan Meslier.

Two minutes before the break, Coutinho and Ramsey combined again to score Villa’s third of the night. Coutinho released Ramsey once again and the midfielder struck high into the net to spark wild celebrations from the home fins.

I want Ramsey to make his own headlines with his football: Gerrard

“I know the level of the England players, I’ve been around it, and have enough experience to know it’s only a matter of time but let’s all be sensible and keep calm about it,” Gerrard said, as Villa missed out on a place in the Premier League’s top 10, as reported by SkySports.

“I want him to make his own headlines with his football. He is a top talent, I’m loving every moment of working with him. He is getting stronger with each game because we’re giving him the platform to express himself. He is in a wonderful place.”

When asked if Ramsey was following in his footsteps, Gerrard added: “He’s not following in anyone’s footsteps. Jacob Ramsey is Jacob Ramsey. He will be a terrific player.

“It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there let me tell you.”
