Arsenal have agreed terms with Bologna to sign 19-year-old Scottish full-back Aaron Hickey for GBP 21 million, claim reports in Italy. The Gunners are looking to strengthen their squad for the next season and they have already actively started doing business in the market. It was no secret that the North London club was targeting the teenage prodigy who has scored five goals in the Serie A this season. Arsenal chiefs recently met with Bologna sporting director Riccardo Bigon to discuss a potential deal and according to Calcio Napoli 24, those talks went smoothly and as planned for the Gunners. Arsenal have found an agreement worth between EUR 20 million and EUR 25 million to sign Hickey.

Arsenal are fighting for a top-four finish

Mikel Arteta’s side are currently placed fifth in the Premier League standings, and are fighting to achieve a top-four finish with two games remaining. Their next match is against Newcastle United on Monday night and they desperately need a victory and hope other results go their way in order to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The Spanish tactician has done a decent job to take the team this far but a 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last term was a big blow to their top-four hopes. The result helped Spurs to leapfrog Arsenal into the fourth spot.

Napoli and AC Milan are also interested in Hickey

Napoli and AC Milan were also keeping track of the Scotland international and preparing for a summer bid. However, Arsenal and Bologna subsequently used excellent relations between them, as per reports, to iron out a deal for Hickey. Earlier the Gunners had signed Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna last summer for EUR 18.6 million plus add-ons and thereby developing a strong rapport between the two clubs. It was a huge profit for Rossoblu, who had paid just EUR 7 million to sign the Japanese footballer from VV Sint-Truiden just two years earlier.

Hickey has scored Serie A five goals for Bologna this term

Two-cap Scotland international Hickey came through the Celtic and Hearts youth systems before rising through the ranks of the latter club. And then, he made the bold move to Italy in September 2020 and went on to make 46 appearances for Bologna so far. This season, he has found the back of the net five times and has registered one assist in Italian top flight football. He is still very young and has room to develop as a player under Arteta if he signs. Kieran Tierney is the stand-out left-back for Arsenal in the current team, but Hickey can be the perfect backup option for now.
